When i was little my mother and i had a song that was "ours" called Baby Mine. Its in the cartoon Dumbo and also on the Beaches soundtrack. In one of my letters to the adoptive parents, I mentioned this, so they asked me if I wanted to have a song like that with this baby. I couldnt think of one for awhile that said how i felt you know? I didnt want it to be really mushy or fake. I chose "In My LIfe" by the Beatles here are the words
There are places I'll remember
All my life though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life I've loved them all
But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I love you more
In my life I love you more
I have been a beatles fan since i was about 12 (i am 25 now). I was just wondering other opinions, if you think this baby will understand how i feel when she is older? Its exactly how i think i will feel.
I am due september 3rd 2005

I think it's wonderful. And I bet they she will. Music communicates in ways words don't quite do it. I bet your baby's paparents 'get' this connection too.
This will always be a 'special' song between the two of you. When she's older, you can explain why you chose it and what it means to you. Or, if you're not planning continued contact, you can write a letter talking about why you picked this song and how it communicates what you feel for her to open when she's older.
My 2 cents.

I think this is a great idea, and what a beautiful choice of songs!!! Im a Beatles fan myself, and this is one of my very favorites. Many Blessings

It's wonderful. I agree with Regina, put your thoughts to paper about why this song along with a written copy of the lyrics. Even if you are going to have ongoing in-person contact this will be a treasure.
Oh and don't forget to play it often now. There are studies showing that babies when they're born respond to everything they hear while in utero. So even as a newborn she'll recognize her 'special' song.

Hi, I have songs for all my kids. "Only You" by Roy Orbison for my son, "I Will", Beatles for my daughter, and "Today" for our little one. I even found a Singing Teddy Bear that sings "I Will" and gave it to my daughter for her 10th birthday. it was very special.

Lovely words Annie, just lovely.....
BTW, I absolutely love "Baby Mine" as well....when my girls were little and we watched Dumbo I have to confess, a tear used to run down my cheek....still does...
That song touched me....maybe more so because I am an adoptee?? Mmmmm....who knows, I do think it would touch most people.
I am not familiar to the music that accompanies the Beatle song "In My Life" but I do have their greatest hits cd at home....might have a listen to it this evening :)
I am so glad to hear that I'm not the only cheesy one! I have had a song picked out for my first child since I was 21 years old. I had no idea that one day I'd be waiting to adopt a child. (I am now 30) The song is "Blessed" by Elton John.
Elton John - Blessed Lyrics
Hey you, you're a child in my head
You haven't walked yet
Your first words have yet to be said
But I swear you'll be blessed
I know you're still just a dream
your eyes might be green
Or the bluest that I've ever seen
Anyway you'll be blessed
And you, you'll be blessed
You'll have the best
I promise you that
I'll pick a star from the sky
Pull your name from a hat
I promise you that, promise you that, promise you that
You'll be blessed
I need you before I'm too old
To have and to hold
To walk with you and watch you grow
And know that you're blessed

It is spooky how well it goes with how I am feeling now as an adoptive mom-to-be.

Annie: I love the song you have picked out for your child. It's perfect!
Or ... "till there was you," (but WE know that it was not penned by them!).
Linda
Beatles fan since age 6, who hums her kids to sleep with (mostly) Beatles songs
All our children have thier own special song. I sing it to them when they go to sleep, are cranky, sick, whatever. I have sang it to them since day one & now when i start to sing it, it calms them down.
They like that it is THEIR special song. We also sing the "Birth Mother's Song" by Michael McLean.
We are a CC family & our adopted children are AA. Our 5 year old DD song is from Tarzan, "You'll Be In My Heart" Our 2 almost 3 year old DD song is by Savage Garden, I Knew I Loved You" & our almost 2 year old DS is called "Beautiful" by All 4 One.
His is hard to find so I printed the lyrics here:
From the moment I saw you
From the moment I looked into your eyes
There was something about you
I knew, Iknew
That you were once in a lifetime
A treasure near impossible to find
I know how lucky I am
To have you
And I've seen rainbows that
Can take your breath away
The beauty of a setting sun
On any given day
And when it comes to shooting stars
I have seen a few
But I've never seen
Anything, as beautiful as you
I can't believe that I have you
I can't believe that you're here in my arms
I have waited a lifetime
For you, for you
And I've dreamed about you
Pictured in my mind
What I might see
But I never imagined
Just how beautiful you'd be.

Special songs are the GREATEST for children, makes them feel more special. :)
GREAT idea

thank you regina for your comments!
I really like your quote, it is reassuring and true! what is your relationship to adoption?
Annie
Annie,
We adopted our son through domestic parental placement a little more than three years ago. Ours is a fully open integrated adoption.
Glad you like the quote. Every time I get all twisted up about life, I read it myself. :)
Regina
what amazing lyrics. I also am familiar with that micheal mclean song, are you LDS? I imagine it is popular outside the church too, tho. I dont know what DD and AA mean, unless they are initials?
Are all of your children adopted?
How open are the adoptions?
Annie
AA is African American. CC is caucasian I think.
DD is Dear Daughter/Darling Daughter
DH is Dear/Darling Hubby
DS is Dear/Darling Son
etc....
