I am a searching for my son born in Decatur, GA on August 15, 1979. He was placed through LDS Social Services (now LDS Family Services). I received some non-identifying information that indicated that he was sent to the Northeast (the woman I stayed with while pregnant volunteered for LDSSS -- I talked to her recently and she said she thought New England). The information said that the adoptive mother's father died at the age of 50. Before his death, he worked at a shipyard. The a-mother's mother worked at a shoe factory. At the time of the adoption, the a-mother was 31 and her mother was 49. That means her mother was 18 when she was born. Given that information, I concluded that the a-mother's father had probably died between 1977 and 1979 -- otherwise his wife would've been 15 or younger when they married! The information also led me to believe that the a-parents lived close to their extended families and that my son was their first child.
The challenge is to find a shoe factory that was in business in 1979 and a shipyard within commuting distance of each other. I have been looking and found that there is a shipyard in Somerset and the is, or was a shoe factory in Brockton. I was wondering how hard it would be to find obituaries from that area between 1977 and 1979 and if anyone knows anyone who could help? I believe if I find the right obituary (I know the make-up of the immediate family) I can get some names.
I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.
Thanks,
Debbie
Hello -
I am a Mass adoptee born in Missouri. The earliest and most active communities for both of these ventures might be New Bedford or Fall River. The shipping industry should have records that may help. If you can tell me anything else that is helpful, pass it on and I will try to help as much as I can.

The General Dynamics or Quincy shipyard in Quincy was at one time one of the largest employers in Mass, and is now shut down. It was definately open in the late 70s.
Brockton (once a big shoe manufacturing town) is about 10-15 mi. south of Quincy.
You can get older obits from the Boston Globe archive (you'll probably pay a fee). Go to www.boston.com
Hope that helps, good luck!
Sorry this took so long, but I have been out of the country. Thank you both for the information. I am starting to gather geographical locations together for my search, but it looks like I am going to have to be there physically to look this information up. The Boston Globe only has obit. information online since 2001. Everything else is on microfilm. Oh well, I guess I will have to travel up there as soon as I have enough money.
Again, thanks for your help.
