We're getting closer every day to being matched (at least that's what my gut tells me). Our agency has said that we will likely be matched quickly because we are willing to accept a transracial adoption. Do any of you have a suggestion for a book or two? I'm looking for how to handle family concerns, making the situation easier as the child goes, etc. I have no idea where to start but feel it's important for us to get started before we have a bundle of joy in our arms!
Thanks.

I have found that there are good and 'not so good' books written about transracial adoptions. A very long time ago, before we adopted our first baby.......I did a college paper on this (while waiting for a placement, of course! :) ).
A good book I remember, was authored by David Anderson....and I cannot think of the name of the book....but it did deal with transracial adoption.
Also, I would think that your own agency would have a nice list of books and videos to watch. And......I would guess that you have already thoroughly discussed this concept with your family and extended family? If not, it's time to.
There are many couples that have had to make tough decisions about the baby they will adopt, based on the ideals and concepts of extended family members. I mean no disrespect in saying this; but I have heard of and witnessed people who have adopted babies and children that were not the race of themselves; and they were unprepared for everything that came with this.
It is not the same as 'same race' adoption...and a family needs to realize that they will never again be considered a 'same race family' or couple again.
Given that, talk to other couples who have BTDT as well. As they say, knowledge is power, and you cannot have too much knowledge in order to be prepared in this area.
We have adopted children from many races and backgrounds...and we'd have it no other way. Just ask and read as much as possible. Most people are only too happy to share their experiences as well!
Best of luck to you.....
Sincerely,
Linny

Another one to try is Black Baby, White Hands, a newer book regarding an AA boy growing up in a CC family. Also, Tapestry Books has a decent selection of transracial adoption books. PS: My husband and I are also open to multi-racial children, and have been told that our wait shouldn't be too long. Now, if we can only get this home study finished!Good luck and God bless,Robyn C.
