We are missionaries in Uganda, Africa and would like to adopt from a local orphanage. It has always been a desire of mine to adopt a newborn and breastfeed him/her. I am currently breastfeeding my 7 month old son and breastfed my daughter until she was 22 months-she is now 3! What suggestions do you have concerning timing? Also, how do you think it would "go over" with a white women breastfeeding a black baby? I have been told by the locals that this is impossible-but I know with God all things are possible. I would appreciate any feedback.
Take Care, Summer
Summer,
You can breastfeed an adopted child, no matter what age, provided of course they will nurse.
There is a wonderful adoptive breastfeeding site,
The Adoptive breastfeeding resource website. I think the address is www.fourfriends.com/abrw Something along those lines. Do a search and it should come up. Goodluck Shelley

I think you can be successful at breastfeeding, and there's nothing wrong with a white women breastfeeding a black baby. My aunt (white) breastfed a black baby (neighbor's baby) because the mom's milk drying up, and my aunt had milk to feed a village (if you know what I mean).
If the adoption happens sooner than later, you won't have to induce laction (which is a little more time consuming), and just transition from your infant to your new adopted infant.
Blessings to you.
