Hiya, I was listening this morning to a "Best of Laura Ingrams" radio show this morning and Rick Santorum was on there saying that the government should show EVEN MORE favoritism toward married couples. I was appalled. From what I can gather, this man is a powerful republican who doesn't look like he's going anywhere. People like him make me nervous. I'm not ready yet, but hope single male parenting is even more possible by this time next year when I start the process. David

Honestly...I think he's gotten more and more cooky as the years have gone by, taking ever more extreme positions (in print and on the air) to satisfy his most right-wing constituents. *shrug* At least, that's how he's been portrayed of late. As I understand it, the majority of people in his state are moving a little to his left (not a hard thing to accomplish). JMHO...:D

Heh, what a relief, I might send a contribution to his competitor. I'm basically a republican (used to be my county's party treasurer), but I don't think you should discriminate based on marital status. I know there are a lot of single men and, whether they want to admit it or not, women who'll hurt kids. I think that married couples should go through extra tough tests, just like singles do. After all, look at all those married teachers who had relations with their students! Marital status is no indicator of being fit to be an adoptive parent. I don't think having bio kids should give you a leg up either. There have been news stories about aparents who treat their akids very differently than the bios. Oh well, I'll get off my rant now. David
Marriage does not equal good parenting. All paparents should be scrutinized equally. I've always been an independent myself, fiscally conservative but socially liberal. So I sympathize with both parties depending on the issue. I have to say tho, that I feel sorry for old-school, Reagan Repubs these days. I honestly think the current party leadership is overplaying it's hand a bit and may suffer for it in upcoming elections. It's plain ol' hubris really, old as the Roman Empire. *shrug* Of course, I could be totally off base...time will tell. ;)
rick santorum has been described as a "neanderthal" which, frankly, is demeaning to Homo neanderthalesis. he's made comments blaming feminism for the end of life here in the US (blaming women for working outside the home and saying feminism did this, without thinking about the economic reality of today).
he's anti-gay, making comments to the associated press in april 2003 such as "If the Supreme Court says that you have a right to consensual sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything."
he also liked homosexuality to bestiality.
on defending marriage:"Isn't that the ultimate homeland security? To defend the sanctity of marriage?"
there are so many more quotes and comments esp since he's eyeing a presidential run in 2008. a poll in may had santorum running 14 pts behind the democratic challenger in his senate race, State Treasurer Bobby Casey. He's so bad that some republicans senators have come out saying that many of his comments are unfortunate and "undermine Republican principles of inclusion and opportunity" Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine.
at the very least he'll have a bit of a fight on his hands at the next election.
Rick Santorum is probably one of the most exteme right-wingers in the Senate today. As a darling of the "Christian Right" (who, let me add, are not very Christiand and are dinitely NOT right), this guy thinks than any family not composed of two parents (legally married, of different genders) and 2.5 children is somehow a threat to American society.
While I am essentially somewhat conservative by nature, it's wierdos like Santorum that keep me out of the Republican Party. I generally take umbrage with any group that lets its leadership portray my family as some sort of abomination.
Sorry, off the soapbox now. ; )
Mike
