We have been selected as the adoptive family for a beautiful AA girl. She's 2 wks old right now and from the pictures, her hair is very silky smooth. She's got lots of it. Will this hair change? Is smooth hair normal at this point? Any info will help.
Chances are.....and VERY likely, this little one's hair will most certainly change. It is not uncommon for AA babies to have this type of hair (just look at so many of the newborns we're now seeing from hospitals in the New Orleans area). Most of these babies I've seen, have had the straightest hair!
My own baby (brought home at only one day of age), had wavey long, thick hair. Within a few months, the waves turned into thicker tight curls....and as she has grown, long, thicker and tighter curls yet!!!! :)
My youngest baby, came at a few months of age. Her hair was much finer, much less 'tightly curled'....and it has remained this way.
I suppose your baby's hair may not change much.....but I would be more inclined to believe that it would! :)
Sincerely,
Linny

It is likely to change. In fact the change can take up to 3 years to be complete.
In that time, the hair she has now may fall out to be replaced by new kinkier hair.
My beautiful baby girl had straight hair and light brown skin at birth, she looked like she was from Indian. Within 2 months her hair got it's curl - though it's still thickening up and maybe by 4 months her color came in all the way. The birthmother told us when her first baby was born, she didn't beleive it was her child because she didn't know about the color and skin changes.
Congratulations on your match --
Jo
We were informed by others who had adopted AA children that the "magic number" was about 9 months to know what texture, etc. the hair would be. It was true for our little guy too.
Janet
as mentioned above...my little guys had such soft, silky hair. By the time they reached 9 to 12 months...the thicker, coarser hair had grown in. Chances are very good that the hair will change from what it is now.

My baby had very soft wavy hair when we got her at 3 days old. I wet her hair down and it tightened up into the tiniest curls. Now she has a very nice afro! Here it is all picked out! And yes, it is still very soft. I detangle and condition EVERY day!
Wow, Do I Ever Remember The Day I Wrote This Original Thread. I Was Like A Deer In The Headlights!! We Have Now Had Our Little Girl For Almost 3 Months. She Is A Love Muffin!
Her Hair Is Still Soft And Lightly Curled. It Is Quite Oily. I Didn't Know, But For The First Few Weeks I Washed It Almost Every Day. Then I Started Asking Around And Was Told To Just Wash It Every Few Days. It Is More Of A Light Curl On Top And Totally Straight In The Back.
Joskimo, I Know What You Are Saying. Many Folks Have Asked Me If Our Little Girl Is Indian. It Takes Me By Surprise Every Time Because It Is So Obvious To Me That She Is Aa. Like Yours, She Was Very Light At The Beginning And Has Gradually Gotten Her Color In. That Is One Thing That I Wish That I Had Known More About. Watching An Aa Baby's Skin Color Come In Was So Amazing To Me. I'm Not Quite Sure How I Thought It Would Happen. Some Days I'd Wake Up And Be Amazed At How Much Her Arms Or Legs Had Darkened Overnight. It Was Like One Body Part At A Time Just Changed Colors. At The Moment She Is Two Toned. Her Face And Belly Is Lighter Than Her Arms And Legs. It Is So Cute!
This Baby Is A Miracle And A Blessing. We Had Begun The Adoption Process Going Through Our State Agency. By God's Grace We Got Hooked Up W/ An Agency/ministry That Specializes In Transracial Adoptions. We Had Not Intended To Adopt Transracially, But God Had Other Plans For Us. We Are So Thankful That We Were Obedient To His Plan. I'm Sitting Here Looking Into The Face Of The Most Beautiful Baby You've Ever Seen. (i'm Sure That Most Of You Feel The Same Way!!!) This Child Is Incredible!
Best Wishes To You All And Thanks For All Of The Responses!
