The father of my son is unknown. He is 4 years old and my husband has been in his life since he was 13 months old. I'm considering just changing his last name to my husbands instead of going through the whole adoption procedure. Does anybody know the price range of an average adoption if I do it on my own and the benefits to adopting versus just changing my son's name?

Actually, I've recently learned that whatever name is on his birth certificate is how he has to be known legally - i.e., school reords and the like. When i was a kid, i simply took my step-dad's last name and used it for everything, but nowadays they don't allow it.
So, while your son could use any name he wanted to, because there is no intent to defraud, legally it would still be as on his birth certificate. I don't know the costs involved as I'm only now starting the process, myself. My daughter's father disappeared a year ago and my husband would like to adopt her now, but we can't do it without her father's permission. Seems that without a father in the picture at all, it *should* be easier..
