We are being shown to a mother of a 2 1/2 year old boy. She is bipolar. Does anyone know what the chances of her son being bipolar also?
I do not know the "statistics", but I do know that it is possible for the child to have bi-polar. We adopted our son at birth and knew that his birthmother was bi-polar. Our son is 3.5 and was just diagnosed with bi-polar, ADHD and OCD. While we are struggling with some of his medical issues and trying to get all the answers that we need to get and determine what the next course of action, he is still very much our son and we love him dearly. We know without a doubt that God knew that we would be able to handle the medical issues that came up with our son. (Even if we do not feel like we can at the time!)
Let me know if you need any further information. I am becoming a research fool trying to learn as much as I can.

Here's some information for you from the American Psychiatric Association:

Generally the chances of a child having a mood disorder increase about ten fold if a parent has that disorder...from about 1 to 2% to a 10% possibility...Also, don't forget that Bipolar Disorder is not a "you are or are not," condition...it is a continium.

Thank you for all your help. The pbmom is currently looking at the profiles. We should hear something midweek. We are excited at the possibility of this child, but are trying to not get to excited. The waiting is the killer.
Have a great day.
