Hello!
I am new to these boards and just getting ready to start the process of stepparent adoption. At least we hope so anyway.
Brief history:
Husband and I married for 7 years, together 8-1/2
Two children, teenagers
Father has had custody for 10 years
NCP ** sporadic visitation, mostly supervised. Substance abuse problem. Multiple incarcerations. 10's of thousands in arrears on child support.
** has had no contact for 2-1/2 years and no child support payments for 11-1/2 months.
We will be meeting with our attorney next week to discuss moving forward with the adoption petition. My question is, ** just made a partial CS payment. How will this affect our petition?
JUst because he made a payment does not disqualify you. IT is either no support or no contact for one year. YOu seem to have the contact out there. The children are also old enough to put there two sense in. Did he make the payment because he knew about the adoption? once the file date is established any attempt after that is probably blamed on the fact that he is just causing problems. you can look in the past for my threads and read them. IT may encourage you.

If you have already filed the petition than it shouldn't effect it at all. You have a good case for stepparent adoption, especially if you have documentation to show the no contact, and no child support payments. Even if you end up not being able to file that the NCP has abandoned the children, you can still file a TPR on the grounds that the parent is unfit to parent the children, so don't give up hope! Their is more than one road to stepparent adoption!
