I was at the bookstore today and saw another great looking book featuring a brown child, but not about diversity. The title is "A Room with a Zoo" and it is about a girl who collects too many pets. Not a picture book, looked like reading level for grade 5 or up, but it is illustrated and it is a brown girl. :)
When our DD was less than a year old, we happened upon a beautiful book, Brown Sugar Babies by Charles Smith, Jr. Gorgeous close-up photographs of AA and AA/multiracial babies, all different shades! Each has a sweet little poem to go along with the baby. DD has loved this book right from the beginning. I wish I'd bought two copies because she is going to wear this one out loving on it! :flower:
For Christmas this year we purposefully looked for books with AA or brown babies/children featured. For her age (nearly 2), we found Yum Tummy Tickly!, by Karen Baicker. The illustrations show all shades of toddlers in a fun food and animal parade. The story is full of silly, descriptive words about eating. Even our oldest teenagers chuckle at the words! It's fun to see how many different ways you can emphasize the words.
