OK, I am still in the remedial stages of kinky hair. Addy's is getting longer by the minute so I have started putting it in four ponies. Her hair is kinky but I can comb it nicely when it's wet and it pulls nice and tight to make nice clean parts for the ponies.
OK - I have been taking them out each night when I do them BUT yesterday, I did such and awesome job, the parts were PERFECT and each pony was in the perfect spot, I couldn't bear to take them out. They got wet in the tub last night, she slept in them and they looked great this morning.
1) How long can they stay in??
2) Should I do anything to them if I leave them in product wise??
3) Will all her hair fall out and she'll have to go to kindergarten bald because her white mommy has NO CLUE   ??????????
Thanks,
Martha
PS - I have the books, but real life is just different
Her braids don't stay in - her hair is more like "white" hair when it comes to that (she's biracial (AA/CC) I can see her hair getting a little coarser as she gets older but not enough so they stay :grr:

martha, is her hair similar to this picture of my daughter? it is a little hard to tell because her hair is so dark, but when my daughter had less hair (like your daughter) i had to use more puffs and ponies, but now that it is longer and filling in thicker, i can leave it loose more. i usually just have to pull the sides up. homefully as your daughter's hair fills in and gets thicker, it will be easier.
Her hair is a lot like that. I'd love a pic of what her hair looks like now!! Oh and I love the 1st Christmas on her little behind - too cute!!
Martha
that is what her hair looks like now. before it was much longer and thinner and really hard to manage, now i can leave it loose, but it has to be washed every day or every other day (mostly because she tends to get food in it) and i leave the conditioner on her hair in the tub for 5 minutes or more and then put a leave on conditioner after her bath to keep her hair from looking fly away. her hair is actually shorter now than it was 6 months ago, because all the baby thin hair has fallen out and new thick hair is growing in and it is beautiful!
Hair snaps! I love these, I found some at Big Lots a few months ago and have been using them to secure twists and braids. I just joined the yahoo adoptionhair group and found out they were called hair snaps-and everyone raves about them like I do. I'm going to try some beads in J's braids this week and secure the ends with snaps that will hold the hair and keep the beads on.
As far as leaving in styles with bands......Lili's I can't leave in for more than two days. Her hair is thin and tends to break easily. J's hair is thick, strong and long, the bands in her twists stay in for 4-5 days including sleeping in them. My mom made the girls cute pillows for christmas and I had her custom make some silk pillowcases to help their do's.

Martha, I am in the minority here I guess. I do not take dd's hair out of it's style for bedtime. I use braid spray or oil (almond, jojoba, or olive) mixed with water on her daily, with the style in. How long it stays depends on the style - sometimes I just redo the same style after a couple days when it starts looking like it needs it. We keep styles mostly simple so they're pretty quick to redo.
None of my friend's de-style their daughter's hair as a routine for bedtime and I don't remember any of my friends doing it growing up.
I don't doubt the benefit to the hair itself but I just cannot imagine adding one more thing to our morning routine to get out the door. I work outside the home and can barely get the minimum done to myself - HA!
(Almost feels like a confession after reading the other posts, but decided to go ahead and post anyway  )
DD kept an afro though, when she was smaller, with the occassional clipped in barrette for pizzazz.
Becky, Your post made me laugh aloud. While we do restyle in the mornings, ask me again next fall when my dd starts school. It may be a whole nother ball of wax.
:D I love doing dd's hair & she loves to have it done but I am grateful that our 2nd is a boy. DD is very girly & very particular about her hair and her clothes. Must be a nature over nurture on that one cuz I'm a slacker on that kind of stuff. Give me a ponytail holder or a ball cap and I'm good.
I think it's about what you do in the morning. dd gets one or two ponytails that are braided, or one or two puffs. we put ribbons in her hair and that's it! takes at most 10 minutes and i'm not fancy, lol.
cornrows are another matter. if I ever get my act together and do that for dd, it will probably last maybe 6 days tops and then boom.
I'm not into the fancy hairdos. Dd won't sit still for them and there's a reason why I cut all my hair off-I hate doing hair!
btw I did work dd's first year and we managed to get her hair done. Now ask me when I have two or more...

I do the same as LisaCA, one or two puffs - usually depending on whether she'll let me have the rat tail comb long enough to make a part. I have been taking them out lately. I'm still hypersensative about her thin area from side to side across the back. I hate to call it a bald spot because it's not really bald, but it's still unladylike :) She her hair is longer we'll get into other styles, for now I'm the puff queen.
dd wears simple styles 99% of the time. The only time she gets beads or cornrows is when she's asked about 10 times. It would be nice to have her hair in long lasting styles, except for the fact that she ends up with sand in her hair every other day from preschool -- of course, it's never her that put it there
I love her hair most just oiled after it's washed & dried naturally. She almost never gets to wear it like that though because the combing thru process then takes forever. Puffs are a staple around here for the end of the week prior to 'shampoo saturday'.
She wants it done at the salon & I've decided to make an appt. They can do everything so much quicker than I can & now that I have 2 kids, I just don't have the kind of time to dedicate that I did before.
I'm going to do everything I can to help her remain prideful of her natural hair. She gets compliments on it regularly and knows that it's beautiful :D
My daugther is AA/Hispanic & her hair is shoulder length (when dry). She has thin, fly away hair. I've been pulling her hair into a ponytail for about one year now. I just started french braiding. That's about the extent of my braiding talent!
I love her hair loose & dried natually with a headband.
At night, I've been guilty of leaving her ponytail in. I just recently noticed that she has alot of new growth coming in so I dont know if that's because of the tight ponytail or just new growth...
I just started using Pantene Hydrating Shampoo for curly hair and Pantene Conditioner plus the leave in conditioner! WOW...her hair looked beautiful once it dried. Her hair was starting to get really dry and this seemed to really help. I also think I was washing it too much. I now wash it once a week but condition it daily. Once she can sit longer, I want to try and learn braiding her hair!!
Does anyone use gel on their daughters hair? If so, what do you recommend? :flower:

I recommend " Dream curls" by FrizzEase. Its not a gel, but a leave-in shaper and its not drying at all. Use generously when hair is wet and don't touch again until dry.

Thanks! I'm buying it this weekend! :flower:
