Hello there,
My husband and I are looking at adopting a little boy. He is 2 years 3 months old. He was born 2 months preemie and weighed 3 pounds 3 ounces at birth. He was not born in a hospital and was abandoned therefore had no hospital care that a preemie would need.
At present he weighs 17 pounds 6 ounces. He has just started walking and only says 3 words. He is extremely malnourished and we have been told he has a heart murmur which may or may not be because he is anaemic.
We are a little apprehensive and I would really love to hear from anyone who might have advice on this situation....
Would it be 'typical' for a preemie to have only just started walking and talking at 27 months?
Thanks
Vee
If he has been neglected, I would say it is "normal" to not talk or walk until now. Also if he has serious health issues. Has his caregiver allowed him the "freedom" to walk and encouraged walking? Have they talked and interacted with him regularly? If he has had all of these advatntages and still was so far behind I might be concerned. If not, it is to be expected, I would think.
My son started walking at about 12 months, but was sort of slow shen it came to speech. He is 2.5 now and has really caught up in the last few months! Maybe this little guy is just a slow starter. Can he be evaluated by a pediatrician before you commit to adoption? Malnurishment main be the main cause. Why is he malnurished!?

It really depends on a number of things. Is this child a domestic or international adoption? Institutionalized children do not meet milestones at the same pace as those raised in homes. If this is a domestic adoption, why is there a malnurishment issue? If this is an international adoption, post this same question on that countries board. My children from Russia have different developmental issues than those from Guatamala because of the way the orphanages are run. I would definitely have an IA doctor review your referral information if this is an international adoption.
