Beannachtai na Faile Padrig oraibh!
Any plans for anyone on St. Patrick's Day? We're heading to a local pub to hear some traditional music and a few pints of Guinness. What's the day without a few choruses of the Wild Rover or Black Velvet Band? :D
Love that phrase...the Irish sure have a talent for the odd phrase that somehow makes sense! DH and I spent our honeymoon in Ireland, and Dingle was one of the places we visited for a few days. LOVED it.
I, too have many memories of the Irish hangouts on St. Patty's day - those on your list and some that are long gone. Also remember (with no small amount of mortification) doing Irish step dances in the middle of some places after a wee bit too much imbibing.
Enjoy your celebration out Opus - sounds like the perfect place.

Well I will admit to knowing a few Gaelic phrases that I can't really share with you! (I like you too much for that!) - I did know Slainte (it's on my door) - and Ireland forever - I know how to say thank you (so could not spell it though!!) - and a few other niceties but that's it!
Random sayings - I have a lot that must be Irish - I know it's Irish and not American when my co-workers look at me funny - but I grew up hearing them so they are so normal to me. Even some of the songs I do with my daughter...
My mother is trying to teach Aisling Irish step dancing - that is funny!
Oh and I will be breaking out the Irish music for my co-workers tomorrow - Makem and Clancy, the Pogues,
Happy Birthday Maura! I'd drink a Guinness to your health but I hate the stuff so it will have to be some Bailey's. (which is a sin in my family as my Uncle works for Guinness as did my Grandfather).
I will leave you with two of my favorite Irish sayiings:
Put silk on a goat and it's still a goat...
The man with the boots does not mind where he puts his foot...
Staying away from Boston. Did that one year and vowed never to do it again. Went to go hear a friend's band play.
So this year I am going to New Hampshire, have a few drinks with a friend and which her a good trip and wish I could fit into her luggage as she is going "home" to Ireland the next day.
ok...showing my age here. Does anyone remember the Blarney Stone in Davis Sq. Somerville about 25 years ago? Yikes..thats when the drinking age was 18...oh boy!!
Karen - That is so cool your mom is teaching Aisling step dancing. I think our Emma would be great at it maybe we should let her take lessons.
Speaking of the Pogues, I got to see them at the Orpheum Theater Wednesday night. Great show but I'm grateful that Shane had a mike stand to hold on to. The guy was so inebriated, he could barely sing.
Maura - Dingle is awesome. We biked along the whole peninsula, the views were incredible. My favorite place there was called Johnny Mack's (I think) which is a haberdashery in front and a full pub in back. Only in Ireland.
Hope everyone has a great day - go easy on the corned beef and cabbage.

Opus I saw them in concert years ago - opening for U2 - I think the only thing that's changed is he has even fewer teeth now - did you see the lovely picture of him in the metro the other day???
Did you see Bobby Flay has a show on food network - Taste of Ireland - very interesting - they have had it on recently again - they showed one pub that is also the town undertaker!!!
There is a backyardigans episode called "high tea" where they do some step dancing - so Aisling tries to use what her Nana taught her - pretty funny!

LOL!!! I think the Blarney Stone is now The Burren (another Irish pub). You mean to tell me the drinking age was once 18 in Mass??!! (only kidding)

:My husband got me a magnet that says "When Irish eyes are smiling...they are up to something!" I love St Pat's day too.
Hope everyone has a wonderful evening...where ever your plans take you. Be safe everyone!
Cheer!
My MIL has that same magnet on her fridge. Have a great day Murphy and go easy on the green beer...
A poll over at Boston.com...

a quick read shows that Bostonians take their Guinness seriously. One comment was: "A pint of Guinness is built, not poured". OK.

Does Boston still have "evacuation day" suspiciously on March 17th?
I actually assume all my customers and partners have today off if they are based up there
Last year I was in Savannah.. what a hoot that is.
It's just not the same in Birmingham, AL :(

That's right - only Suffolk County gets Evacuation Day off -conveniently.
Thanks Opus...I will...I just want to try it. Never have before....not really a beer drinker.
Has anyone ever gone into the Irish Chat rooms? I thought about it but you have to subscribe to some of them. But thought it may be neat to chat there too with some folks really into their roots? Just wondering.
Happy St. Patricks day! :)
I used to chat in the Irish rooms and made a great friend who lives over there. It was really cool seeing how the culture over there is and getting someone's first hand experience.

opus...YOU DON"T REMEBER the drinking age being 18...oh boy do I ever... It was because of my generation they puched it back up to 21...we were killing ourselves and 16 year old were sneaking into clubs! As a mother now, boy am I glad they changed it!

My sister turned 18 the year they changed it to 21. I remember how upset she was that she got to the magic age only to have the state up it.
