This is sooo frustrating. I just called 2 separate agencies that handle Bulgarian adoptions and got 2 total different answers !!My question was - If theie Bulgarian adoption program was open to new applications and how long would the process take from start to finish...#1 said - We are accepting new applicants, if will take atleast 2 years to complete it from start to finish after the dossier is sent to Bulargia. ( she didnt sound friendly )#2 said - They are accpeting new applications. It depends on the age of the child we want and sex of child. She said that things are starting to move faster now so it will take about 8-10 months for a referral, again depending on what age etc. ( she was a lot nicer )I know that most of you have been waiting a very long time for your referral but is that because of the political thing in Bulgaria ?Will things speed up ?? This is so frustrating !!!

I have been in the process 2 years, and was just referred a special needs child. I jumped through MANY hoops to get this child. If you want a special needs child, or one over the age of 5, you could perhaps, have a referral in under a year. Bulgaria is not the most stable and reliable of countries. If you need a timeline, this is not the best country to choose.
I would bank on 15 - 18 months for a referral. If you get one earlier, consider yourself lucky.

Gillian, There are plenty of agencies that are taking applications. You can go directly through a Bulgarian agency or of course several that are based in the states. As Kay said, the timeline is very hard to pin-point right now. Things have only just started back up with the new laws. ...According to Bulgaria's goal, they intend that the whole process should take 6 months and from acceptance of referral to bringing the child home another 3 months. Again, that is all on "paper" (see the MOJ website for all these particulars) and not as yet in practice. ...Still, we live in hope ; -) Best Wishes, KWien
