Hi, Would like to make contact with anyone out there who has a baby that does this, or knows of someone that does.... Our 14 month old boy holds his breath when he screams....turns purple and goes stiff and then passes out. Once he passes out, he starts breathing again. Apparently it is normal although uncommon....I have been told to ignore it otherwise he will know that that is how he gets what he wants.... Any suggestions or advice??? Vee

Hello Vee, Your post brings back memories. My little brother would do this when he was younger than yours. My grandma was cooking breakfast one morning when he did this. He turned blue, it scared her to death. He outgrow it. My daughter who was a preemie would do this. She looked like a bull frog. She would hold her breath and then when you thought she was going to throw up or pass out, she would scream bloodly murder. She outgrow it. The doctor told me as long as she was sitting up in her swing so in case she throw up she wouldn't choke or she was somewhere she wouldn't hit her head if she passed out she would be fine. The 3 month old boy I have in placement now does this. He turns red then dark purple, gets so stiff you can't put him on your shoulders or sit him down on your leg to pat him. I wish you luck and hopes he gets over it soon.
