The book "How To Adopt Your Stepchild In California" is the ONLY thing you need. It took only 5 months (from buying the book to the court date) for my husband to adopt my children. That was four years ago. Our costs were: the book, copies of birth certificates, marriage licenses, and the divorce decree, and a court filing fee. Our phonebook has a section in the front with county social services. I found "stepparent adoption" as one of the listings. May God bless each and every one of you.

I was told that there is an investigation fee as well as the filing fee. The filing fee is 20 dollars but the investigation fee 270 dollars. Is there a way to avoid that fee?
