K, I'm confused...don't we already know our adoptive names???? How do we find out our birth parents name. I was born 12.22.59 in terrant Cty to Mary Jo Quillen. Unfortunatly she has died and no one in her family even knew I existed...so, no one knows who my birth father is...except my birth mother and the fine, but selfish , state of TExas ...and it might take an act of congree before they open those files to we adoptees!! Any help would be most appreciated!!! :thanks:

This is my understanding of the birth index on Rootsweb. It lists the names of infants born in specific dates in that county. Yes, it does list the adoptive names. But if you gather the names of the children born on that day, either boy or girl, depending on your gender.......you can then look at the birth books in Austin which list baby's by birth name such as Baby Smith, infant of Jan Top. If Jan Top did not give up her baby, it should be listed in the birth index on rootsweb as the baby's last name of Top. Example "Mary Jane Top" If Jan gave her baby up for adoption, the name "Top would not be on the lndex list, but would be in the Austin books.
Most of the babys last names in the Austin books should match what you have on the list from the index. If you find a name that is not a match on your list, then that's your possible birth mother. (assuming no other babies born on that day in that county were also given up for adoption.) It's just a process of elimination. Hey if you can narrow it down to even 2 or 3 possible names, that's a heck of a lot smaller list than any woman who's your mother's age at birth.
Do you know anyone who can go to Austin? Where would a person go? Are the Austin records on the computer?

I found the birth books at the public library. It should be in the reference section on microfilm by year. I know for a fact that it is at the Ft. Worth Public library.
