No tequila, but coconuts?

Natasha and I purchased a whole coconut from the grocery store. It was our science experience of the week.
We got out a screw driver and hammer to crack it open. Natasha was very disappointed by the taste of the milk and raw coconut.
It was actually very funny. She drank some and ran for the sink to spit it out. Then she put her tongue out and yelling "yuck".

What comes out of a coconut is not milk, it's coconut water. Coconut milk is made from adding a bit of water to grated coconut, then squeezing and squeezing the liquid out of the mix. It's much thicker, whiter and has more flavor. It's used a lot for cooking.
Here, the hooch is made from the sap of the coconut tree, but is fermented, not distilled. It's called 'kalu' and is an acquired taste, being very yeasty.
I've had my share of arak in my checkered past. Tuak, also. I could tell stories of long longhouse nights in Borneo ... but I won't.
