I miss my favorite thread from the First Year forum, so let's start one here! Let's see - yesterday, was really the first time I thought our 16 mo had truly mastered eating with a fork. He looked like a pro, stabbing his pears, and getting them up to his mouth. I've tried many types of toddler and baby utensils, but the fork he does best with, is the Oneida (engraved with his name, of course) tiny set, just like the ones we all had when we were growing up (that are still in my mom's silverware drawer). Also, not a good milestone, but we survived our first medical incident with blood/scare/night call to the doctor/and trip in to see him the next day - dog bite. VERY scary, but fairly proud of how all the humans held up to the crisis. Babe is perfectly fine, poor dog will never be the same! He really got scared.

*waves hi* Guess I've graduated to this board now (or is it DD, since she's the one that had a birthday? :) )DD's most recent milestone is crawling!! We are very excited about this, though our parents think we are crazy for wanting her to be crawling. She crawls about half the time now and scoots on her butt the other half the time.DH says she is also saying 'duck' pretty clearly now (he practices with her during bath-time, lol!). She used to say 'duh-t' but he says there is now a distinct 'k' sound. And, not really a milestone since she's been doing this for a while, but just really cute... today at the mall I was eating some ice cream and gave DD a bite, which she throughly enjoyed, but then after a bit she looked up at me and signed 'more please'. I do think this was one of the first times she actually signed the whole phrase without prompting, though!
I don't think I ever joined in on this over on the First Year boards, but there's SOOO much to tell about lately!

Signing spontaneously for "eat" and "all done." We usually have to ask if she wants "more" before she'll show the sign. However, yesterday we were playing a game where she opens her mouth wide and then wants me to copy. When I stopped, she signed "more" and then opened her mouth wide. Too cute!

She'll only be fed if she has food on her tray that she can feed herself in-between bites of what mommy is offering. I'm NOT GOOD with the whole baby-feeds-herself-and-the-floor thing!

Scooting on her butt all over the house. Still working at crawling.

Got her first real Stride Rite shoes last week. Soooo cute.

Tooth # 5 showed up today. That explains yesterday! :flowergift:
Every day is something new. I love it!
This age is so fun. So many people told me that each stage you just love more and more. I couldn't imagine missing those wonderful tiny baby days, and some days I still do, but this toddler stuff is GREAT right now! (Tiring, frustrating some times, but still great!) It's neat to see them learning things. Lilly using the "more" sign for something other than food shows she's able to apply something she knows to a different situation. SO SMART! I remember the first time my little boy was rummaging through my drawers in the bathroom and took out a hair clip and put it up to his head. He knew it was supposed to go in hair! (Although I hope he doesn't have a barrette fetish later on.....)

Michelle, that is super funny about crazy monkey girl...still LOL! Let's see...Nat's most recent accomplishment? Well, she's totally the boss of me! She leads me all around the house by holding my hand and shows me what to do for her or what to get for her...LOL! She's really taking that whole "princess" thing a little too far :)
My monkey does that too---she opens and closes her hand, like she's beckoning me to COME HERE NOW! (I don't know where she would have picked that up?!?!)
She's also to the point where she wants to pour everything (1/2 gallon container? she's game?!?), take medicine herself (no more dropper, just in a little measure cup, please) and basically, if she can reach it, she will attempt it. Completely exhausting, but sooooo amazing!!
Well, recently DD has decided to start teething in earnest!! Oh my gosh the crankiness and sleepy nights! (which in turn make me cranky, which makes DD even more cranky... ack!!) Boy did we have it easy with her 2 bottom front teeth. A little crankiness, lots of drool, one sleepness night and bam! tooth! For the past month she's been working on a top tooth, which is just peeking out of the gum. The one next to it we can see just under the gum. So, for the past month with all the sleepless nights we've put oragel on her top gums thinking thats whats bothering her. Nope. 2 days ago as I was feeding her I noticed a molar on the bottom!! A molar already and no top teeth yet! Hehe... told DH and he says 'guess that explains why she'd always been chewing on the side instead of in the front'... also explains why the oragel didn't seem to help much... it was the molar bugging her and not the top teeth. So, last night DH mentions that he thinks she's cutting another molar (on the other side of her lower jaw)... and sure enough this morning I noticed it peeking its little head through. DD is cutting 4 teeth right now!! And she won't chew on anything but her finger. :(On a side note... my MIL was with me when I discovered the molar and she started laughing at told DD 'you really need to work on those top teeth so you can eat more food!' Hehe... I told her that DD will just hold the food in her mouth till it gets mushy enough to gum it. And she's pretty adept at gumming foods!!
Oh, H did this too----isn't that weird looking when they have molars and no other teeth except the top ones? H's new milestone: He "assisted" w/ his haircut yesterday. Yes folks, that would be haircut number 10 at 19 months! I couldn't take him yesterday, so our nanny did. My hairdresser cuts his hair, and she lets him hold the electric clippers (the ones she uses to do men's sideburns) The theory was that they aren't sharp, so he can't hurt himself w/ them and he's fascinated by the vibration, so he sits still for his haircut. Apparently, he was watching one of the other hairdressers use the clippers on a guy in another chair, so he turns them on and before his nanny could stop him, reached up and shaved his sideburn off! We had to do the other one to match, so now he's got kind of a bowl haircut. It was pretty funny----he was very proud of himself. I think we'll have to come up w/a new distraction though!

Our dd is about to walk, in fact she started walking on her knees this week! She was a slow crawler - not til 11 months. But is very advanced with fine motor skills. Today when taking her temp (she isnt feeling well) i let her have the plastic case for it. She figured out how to take the cap off AND put it back on!! I was so impressed I hoorayed her and got her to smile. (very cranky and out of sorts today!) She only says uhoh, dada and mama and occasionally cat, oh! ahhh! and I bye. She recently started crying when we tell her no. Poor baby is starting to realize the world isn't entirely her oyster! (How the heck do you keep them from pushing the buttons on the tv and electronic equipment!?)
mrsdata - Orajel also did not work for us, and now maybe I can see it's because you don't always know which sport is the most sore! We switched early on to Camillia drop, and now swear by Hyland's Teething Tablets - they're both homeopathic. I think they're both available at my Walmart now, but I had gotten them at the Pharmacy or health food stores before. I could not make it through this teething without them. Especially with the molars!!!! UGH>
We FINALLY did it - almost 20 months old, and had the first official hair cut this morning! We cut off his tail/mullet in April , and I tried to trim over his ears, but we had to make the decision - go for the shaggy look, or turn him into a little big boy.... It took only about 10 minutes (with one fruit bar treat and a sippy cup and singing and photo taking as distractions) - and he did so well! He even let the hairstylist hold him for a picture - which shocked us to pieces! He doesn't look completely different or too much older, as I had feared. Woobie - you'd have been proud - it sounds like AP was a big brave boy, just like you were!!! HBV - I know you're laughing - H has had, what 25 haircuts by now??? I'll try to post a pic on my blog soon. YAY! We did it. It wasn't too painful (for mama)... Now we'll see how long it lasts before we have to go back for another.
