Our town has "Celebration" every year before the 4th of July. It's an all day affair geared towards kids and they have Concerts going on...usually bands from the 70's and 80's (last year they had REO Speedwagon...he didn't look so good in his red leather pants) and the celebration is ended with Fireworks. Lots of fun!!
I check out the free bees at the library...They have passes tomusuems and theme parks at most. You just sign up for available dates. There is also a events paper/magazine in my area that list activities for children for the month (plays, art shows, contests). I get passes from my bank for the movies at discounted rate and we go out a movie once a month...then we also check out dvd's for free from the library. Try to scout out buffets in your area with a wide selection and do some activity like skating/sleding and then buffet to refuel. There are tons of things that are cheap/free for little ones not so much for older kids
Okay, I am not sure this would qualify as a favorite thing, but it was fun. Today was Dr Seuss's birthday, which was a big deal at school, with all sorts of special activities. When we got home the kids thought we should continue the festivities. So after dinner they (two fifth graders and a first grader) brought down the Seuss books, I popped some popcorn, Dad poured the juice and we sat around the kitchen table taking turns reading Seuss books. It was a great opportunity to get everyone together, and fun for the 5th graders to see how good their little brother can read now. We capped it off with my High Speed Fox in Socks and ice cream!

One night a week we watch tv in the living room while we eat dinner. We have game night and sometimes I bake cookies, etc. Sometimes dd and I have a girls' night where we pop in a video, paint our nails, whatever. Our goal is to every night have a family Worship night where we read some scripture, a fun story to dd, etc. During the day I let her pick out two Bible songs to sing when Daddy gets home and we have our Worship night. This usually only lasts about 15 minutes, but it's great time spent together.
