Hi All... DH and I are getting ready to pick up our daughter from Ethiopia.... We were just wondering if any of you have been successful in receiving either the 21 free days of adoption leave (after placement), or the 4 month deployment deferrment? We are having trouble finding anyone who knows anything about either (we are stationed in Germany). Thanks so much!

As someone in the personnel career field... I am Air Force (cannot speak for other branches).
The 4 month deferment SHOULD be an automatic. The active duty member should have a deployment availability code (DAV) updated that would make him/her non-deployable for 4 months due to adoption (unless it is a mil-to-mil married situation, only 1 parent gets the code in that situation). The military member should check with their unit deployment manager to ensure the code is updated after the adoption. (MPF making the updates in DEERS should trigger the DAV code, I believe; but it may require a manual update.)
The 21 days is permissive TDY; not sure what has been said elsewhere on this forum but that is commander's discretion.
The 4 month deployment postponement is ONLY for dual military couples, or military member who is single. You can google to find more info on that.
DH received the 21 days non-charged leave, no problem. What a great thing. It is at the command's discretion when/whether to allow the leave (not likely they'll send someone home from deployment, etc.) but when they do grant it it is always non-chargeable. It doesn't have to be consecutive days BTW.
Just noticed live4rachael's reply above...apparently in the Air Force the 4 month deployment deferment is available to a couple where only 1 spouse is active duty but from everything we were told (Navy) and all the info we found online it's only for dual military couples/single military members. does anyone know if that whole 21 day leave can be applicable while deployed?? Like I stated in my post, we're still looking for a way to get DH home to be able to be in court for Emom to sign her TPR. just curious. any other websites you all have and would like to share would be greatly appreciated!!!!
