So we are scheduled for our first home study on 3/17/14, last tues I get a call about a newborn baby boy if we could take him! Of course! I was in total shock, within 2 hours the baby was in my arms. CSW stated mom had mutiple children taken away, father was in prison. I signed 2 pieces of papers and she left, I just didn't feel right. We hadn't done our home study why were we on the list, against my better judgement I called our SW and left her a message about getting a baby. 2 days go by and she finally calls back and says" what do you mean they gave you a baby, you can't have him.you haven't done your home study!"
Well my response was you should come and do it cause I'm already in love with him. She called back just to say they were picking him up and we couldn't keep him.
Heartbreaking, this wasn't our fault, how can they do this? I understand there in a risk with adopting but if your doomed from the start with a mistake, how is that fair????
I've emailed asking why we couldn't keep him through the process, with no response.
Is this typical of how the process works???
You are right,I knew our homestudy wasn't complete yet but I have my license through the state already so I believed that the homestudy was something that could be done at any time since that was for the county.thats why I called my SW to let her know about him,I wasn't trying to hide it.when you get the child everything you learned in class goes right out the window, well at least for me it did
I'm a newbie and I'm still learning.cant guarantee I won't do it again lol

I think they should've left baby with you and just went ahead and done your home study ASAP. That is crazy!! What about their policy of not wanting to move children multiple times???? It was clearly their fault for calling you-I'd have done the same thing when we first got licensed had they called us. I don't think you did anything wrong. They called you-obviously you assumed they wouldn't call if it was not okay to place a kid with you prior to the home study. Sorry your first experience has already been heart breaking :(
