I have been trying to find the answer to this question for a while now..... so I was wondering if someone here knew. We're matched with a girl who is due in AUgust. She has her own insurance, but does not think it will cover the baby's hospital stay.... and I have been trying to find out if tricare will cover that...... i have called DEERS, 1-877 TRICARE, the ID office.... no one knows the answer and just passes me off to the next office. anyone know where i can find the info???THANKS!

Newborns or children pending adoption are covered as TRICARE Prime/Prime Remote beneficiaries for 60 days after birth and/or placement in legal custody as long as one person in the family is enrolled in TRICARE Prime

Don't know if this helps, but as soon as our girls were born and birthparents signed relinquishment papers we got a letter from our agency stating we were adopting such and such child through them and it had the birthdate etc on it and the coverage was retro-active to their date of birth. I would go to your local DEERS office in person to get answers and ask to speak to the NCOIC.
yea, I figured we'd end up doing the 60 days and then having to reapply for another 60..... in VA we have a 10 day waiting period to sign TPR.... and getting a birth certificate and SSN wouldn't be relatively easy that fast. I guess I will just be making a trip to DEERS office to make sure that things will go smoothly, as my DH is gone and won't be home until a few months after the baby is born. Thanks ladies :)
Hey, Usually when a baby is born, the baby automatically falls under the mother's health insurance for the initial stay in the hospital; unless there is some totally separate issue with the baby's health. So they baby's stay in the hospital should be covered, our daughter's was covered by her birth mother's insurance. As I recommended earlier in my prevous post, get to a DEERS office ASAP. As soon as you have temporary custody paperwork placing the baby in your custody, get to a DEERS office. Any military base near by where the baby is born should have a DEERS office. The sooner that baby is in DEERS the better. Tricare will have to pick up bills from the day the babyis enrolled in DEERS. Don't wait the standard 60 days to officially enroll the baby in DEERS. The baby will be enrolled with a temporary ID number until you get the baby's SSN. Our daughter was over 15 months old before we were able to get her SSN. We had absolutely no problems with DEERS or Tricare covering anything.
