We weren't required to have an actual credit report done. We just had to list all of our major regular payments: House, cars, student loans, etc. And then you give them an income statement. For us it was a copy of our W2s from the previous year.
Basically they wereinterested in our debt to income ratio. Did we have enough money to support one more member of the family?
But every agency is different. If you're concerned about it, just ask what they'll require before you sign on.
Hope this helps.
We're in Michigan and our daughter was also born in Michigan.
We went with The Keane Center for Adoption in Dearborn, MI.
No, we were not required to have a credit report pulled, to my knowledge.
We were required to fill out a financial statement listing all our assets and debts and a monthly budget showing where our money goes. We had to prove that we could live within our means. If you can do that, you should have no problems.

Some agencies do, and some agencies don't. And it is also possible that some states require it, though I believe that most don't.
Even if no credit report is requested, you WILL be asked for proof of income, proof of home ownership or rental, information about your monthly expenses, and so on.
If you have a fairly significant debt load, you may well be counseled to put off adoption until you pay off some debts and organize things so that you are living within your means. Raising a child is expensive, and agencies want to make sure that adopting will not put you into a situation that causes you to go on welfare, face foreclosure or bankruptcy, or have difficulty meeting your child's basic needs.
