Hi,
I'm an adoptee, but here is a VERY easy search tip for any birth parents/ birth families:
If you are a birthparent/birthfamily and know the adoptee's birthdate and birth county, finding his or her adoptive name (or narrowing down to a few names, at least) is VERY VERY easy!
There is a MN Birth Index on ancestry.com that is searchable by date of birth and county. If you search using the baby's date of birth and county of birth, the baby WILL be on that list (listed under his/her ADOPTIVE name).
Once you find the list, just rule out any babies that are obviously of the opposite gender, which should narrow it down to just a few. Obviously, heavily populated counties will have a longer list but even when I put in my own personal information (born in Hennepin County, probably the most populous) there were only about 15-20 baby girls born that day. My adoptive name was on the list. So a BMOM would be able to easily narrow down to 15-20 possibilities at the very most. For less populated counties, I imagine it would be even fewer names.
Hope this helps someone! You do have to subscribe to ancestry.com to see the database but I did the monthly option which is 19.99 and then just cancelled it once I looked around a bit (nothing there to help me as an adoptee). So, only costs 19.99 to get the above info.
Now, if only it could work the other way around to help us adoptees! Unfortunately the birth index ONLY lists adoptive names and NOT birth names...so it is helpful to BMOMS/BFAMS but not adoptees.
Good luck in your search!
Melissa
