Hi everyone,
hope someone can enlighten us. we are very disappointed right now. We finished our homestudy which went fine and had our first contact with our lawyer who is supposed to start the process with the CEJA for us since we're Americans and don't live in Brazil. we just spoke to our lawyers in Brazil who told us that toddlers in Brazil are given only to Brazilian citizens and that we should expect to get a child who is nine years or older. Does anyone know about that. We also are looking to adopt 2 siblings, does not that make it a lot easier? Also if you had a good experience with a lawyer I would love to get some suggestions. my email is danilita1@yahoo.com
Thank you and lots of luck to everyone.

I brought home my 2 kids from Brazil on Jan 9. They are 8 and 10 year old siblings. My lawyer and facilitator told me that the babies and toddlers are adopted by Brazilians and the youngest age available is 4. You may be able to adopt a younger child if they are part of a sibling group. Hope this helps.

We are currently in the process of adopting a 3 year old little girl from Brazil. She is considered special needs which is why we were able to adopt her so young. Our paperwork has been with CEJA since March 27th and we are hoping to hear something anyday. We used an agency instead of an attorney there. If I can answer any more questions please feel free to email me mhglas@comcast.net. Good luck with your process.

I haven't started my process yet but as a member of an adoption community (Orkut.com) I have learned that you must file with each City from where you plan to adopt SEPARATELY. It sounds like you can use the same papers, but in order to have a large pool of prospective available children it looks like you need to register with several jurisdictions. See the CEJA website for each state/city contact info.
Best of luck to everyone.

it will be almost impossible unless the child has some significant special needs...I am also Brazilian and I am looking into Brazilian adoption. If you live outside of Brazil you are treated with international adoption...WHich means that Brazilians living in the country have priority adopting, and there are tons of Brazilians in line waiting for a baby/toddler.Most of the ones who are in line for a long time would accept a child under 2 with minor special needs, so the only way she could get a baby would be if the baby had some higher special needs (HIV+, cerebral palsy, down syndrome, some genetic or serious cardiovascular or respiratory issue). if she goes for a child from 2-5 she migth be able to get a minor special needs child (probrably of mixed or black race)... For "healthy" children, only over 5....She might also be able to get a health baby if the baby comes as part of a (usually big) sibling group
I would add that the rules change depending on where in Brazil you adopt. It is not my experience as we adopted in Brazil as foreigners living in Brazil. My son was almost three but Brazilians always got first choice of infants. I have a friend too, who adopted in Brazil as a foreigner single parent and her son was just over 1. Most children are of mixed parentage. It is not my experience that children with severe medical issues are given to those who do not request them. Be aware that Attachment issues (emotional) while not apparent in the "honeymoon" period can and do come up later most especially for children over the age of 1 and certainly for those over the age of 3.
Hope this helps.
