Hi, my name is Audrey and my father was adopted with sealed papers in California. I live in AZ so it's not like I can go to the office of a lawyer or court. I want to find my paternal grandmother since my father is having health issues that can be genetic. Does anyone have any ideas on how I might be able to find out who she is? I only have her last name from the bc. I would greatly appreciate anyone's insight or input. I'm at a complete loss at this point.
Thank you:banana:

About California adoption records, familysearch.org says: Adoption RecordsAdoption records in California are available to the adoptee who is age 21 or older, the birth parent of an adult adoptee, and in some circumstances, the adoptive parent of an adoptee who is under age 21.An adult adoptee, 21 or older, may obtain identifying information on their birth parents if the birth parents have provided written consent to have the information released. The birth parents may request identifying information on the adult adoptee, age 21 or older, if the adoptee has given written consent to have the information released. [1]The original birth certificate is available only by order of the court. ***Have you already tried to see what you can get through the state of CA?If your father was adopted through an agency in CA, he may be able to contact them to ask for non-identifying information.Putting that together with the last name you have (no first name, just the last?) could help you get started searching on sites like ancestry.com, classmates.com, and more. If it's a unique enough last name, you could possibly try searching for her without a first name, and just try to narrow things down by approximate date of birth, location, etc... but California's a big state with a big population, so the name would have to be pretty unique to be helpful on its own.Someone else might have more ideas to share. Good luck!

Thank you for your info about Cali adoptions. I do not know if my father's mother consented for him to look for her. He is not competent to make his own decisions due to a massive stroke. I have seen his bc and found his mother's last name only. I don't know her age, first name or even if that was a maiden or married last name. I honestly feel like I've hit a brick wall with her alone. The only reason I'm doing this is for health reasons. I have no desire to really get to know his family, just health history. Thank you for your advice and I'll search classmates since I've tried ancestry and got nowhere.Again thanks :)
