Im living in central PA. WhatҒs a good distance to look for a-parents at? I meanIŒve been looking at MD, PA, NY, and NJbut then I was thinking, maybe PA is too close to meŅ.
So what is a good distance (in miles or travel time) between the a-parents and b-parents?
Where should I be looking?
I dont think I want to accidentally bump into them at the supermarket҅but how far away is too far?
What is a good distance for you?
I lived in Pittsburgh and the adoptive family lived in Philly when I placed. I have since moved two hours west. IMO, it's too much space but, thankfully, we make it work.
If you're looking 1-4 hours from central PA, go Philly or Pittsburgh.

It will give me directions from point-A to point-B but if it can do what I'm looking for, I can't figure it out. It would be useful i I knew where the potential a-parents live...but I'm looking for something that could help me find a location between 1 and 4 hours from my current city and mapquest doesn't seem to be able to...nor does google maps...
I did a little experiment with Google Maps because well, I'm a map freak. Don't get me started but I used to look for places I dreamed of living (that seemed much more exciting than Western Kansas at the time...) like Success, Saskatchewan and Eek, Alaska when I was little. Needless to say (and I shouldn't really...) I have this thing... with maps.
Okay, so with Google Maps, no it doesn't do what you want it to but... if you put your home address in it will pinpoint it and then you could start estimating distances from there by putting in other cities. My experiment (because I have that kind of time, lol! I'm on my lunch break!) you said you were from Central PA, an area I admit I am not too familiar with. So... I picked Williamsport, PA as it seemed somewhat central.
Then I started putting in names of cities that seemed to be about 200-300 miles away (which would be your limit for the four hour max you talked about)... for WIlliamsport some of these cities included as far west as Youngstown Ohio and north bordering Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, to White Plains and Poughkeepsie (I did that one mostly because I liked the way it sounded, lol!), New Haven... and then South all the way down to Richmond VA. With all those points, if in fact, you lived in Williamsport, couldn't you draw a big ole circle and assume that most points in the middle of all your end points would be the area you wanted to look? It isn't exactly what you are looking for (sorry... ) but it might be a start.
ETA: Or, you could just ask Jenna!!!
Sorry I'm not much help...
I'm actually closer to Camp Hill/Harrisburg/Hershey (where I live, work, and shop) than Willamsport but your search (you must have a lot of time) gives me a base to look at. I'll grab a north East Atlas when I get home and start picking cities at random. I like the idea of drawing a big outer circle and a small inner circle and then pinpointing locations in between...
Pittsburg is a 5 hour drive or train ride from here. 2 hour flight. Philly is a 2 hour drive or a 45 minute flight...so I'm not perfectly central...
Pittsburg is in Kentucky. Pittsburgh is in PA. ;)
That said, it's only a 45 minute to an hour flight from Pittsburgh to Philly so you're off on your flight times. (says the woman who has flown to Philly for almost 15 years to visit family!)
Oh I agree, 45 minuted from Philly to Pittsburgh on a jet or an hour on a reasonably new plane with propellers...but last time I flew into Philly from Harrisburg (to catch a connecting flight) it was an hour from takeoff to landing on a propeller plane so small and ricketty that I was afraid to board it and I had to run for my connecting flight because it was only supposed to take 40 minutes to "puddle jump" to Philly.

I'm confused now as to whether you're talking about Pitt or Philly, but, yes, on a prop plane, the flight from Philly to Pitt is about an hour, hence the 45 to an hour.
I'm in central PA so I fly out of MDT (Harrisburg) went I fly. It's a tiny airport.
I was wrong about my duration to Pittsburgh though...it may be that the last I flew there, (admittedly about 5 years ago), I used a different airline than I'm seeing now. I think it's funny that you can get from PIT to PHL in the same amount of time it would take me to get form MDT to PIT...
I'm not sure I can actually put these here but these are the flight times I get:

We live in North Central Kansas, DD's birthparents lived in Southeast Texas the last time we knew for sure, which was when Yuna was placed with us. We don't have any contact with them by their choice, so we don't know if they're still there or not. Obviously too far away for frequent visits, but since they don't want any contact with us anyway, I suspect part of the reason they gave us the okay is because we live so far away.
I live about a five hour drive away from where my son's adoptive parent's live. I have to say that it would have been better in many ways if it was closer. I could not do things, like concerts and baseball games, that he wanted me to see during the week. On the other hand, it was always a week-end visit so we got a lot of down time together. It was not a "quickie" visit.

But did you want to be able to make it to concerts and baseball games or would it have been too hard?
Is there a happy medium where I could be there for those things with a little planning but not so close I'm going to trip over them in the grocery store?
WIth mapquest, and an atlas, I've managed to at least get a good idea of the driving distance between places...but it's so frustrating and every time I ponder it, I need a long walk in the sun to bring me back anywhere near "normal functioning" and I need to be able to function.

Actually it was my son that wanted me at the concerts and ballgames. I managed to get what I could on week-ends. In the end it was not about what I wanted/needed but the needs of all my kids. The two I am raising also wanted/needed contact with their brother and vise versa.

I feel our situation was perfect for that. We live an hour and a half away. Not too far for a day trip, but not going to run into them. Actually, I wish we lived closer now, I think we'd see each other alot more and for more spur of the moment things. I like how our relationship has evolved that way.

I currently live in a little town called Jennerstown about 80 miles east of Pittsburgh. My father lives in Mechanicsburg which is about a 2- 2 1/2 hr drive. (I make it frequently.) As you know, travel times and distance are not exactly the same thing given the mountains of PA. I would think that Frederick or Hagerstown, MD, or even Baltimore would work. To the north Williamsport would work (It took me a little less that 2 hours to get to Lewisburg from Palmyra last week. My birth son (aged 35) lives in Spring Grove (between Hanover and York) which is close enough for me to go when invited (like next week for his son's 1st birthday).
You might want to start looking at profiles and see if any of them strike you. As several people have noted, we are a mobile society and people rarely stay put in one place. (My bson once lived next door to my sister; unfortuately it was before we were reunited and we didn't know it at the time!)

I assume that means you don't want to have an open adoption? I think our agency tries to be sure the a-family and b-family are no closer than 100 miles, if they are, it has to be okayed by both parties prior to the adoption taking place. Hope that helps!
Open adoption as in regular contact and visitsӔ? Yes.
Open adoption as in canӒt leave the house without bumping into them by accident? No.
I donԒt think it would bother me if I didnt already have a child҅but my daughter is 6 and as she would know the parents and baby (her bio-sibling) and is open enough to share with anyone she happens to be withlike a babysitter or teacher or distant cousinŅI just dont want to have to explain to strangers҅but I dont want her to feel it needs to be hidden. I think this is best accomplished by making theyҒre not close enough to see by accident.Ӕ
