i have a question i am goin to be adopting my lil brother who is 16he is getting social security from when my father died when he was 12 now my question is will he lose it if i adopt him i am a single guy if more details are needed for an acurate answer please email me at czydodge112@aol.com he currently lives with my mom in az thank you for all the help mike
It is my understanding that whether custody is transferred or parental rights are terminated for adoption that the social security is continued with the child until they are 18. I have a friend whose oldest son receives the social security even after the adoption though it does affect the amount of her adoption subisdy.

this is true...even children who are adopted continue to received survivors benefits from a deceased biological parent until the child turns 18.
I received survivor benefits from my deceased father after my adoption until I graduated from high school -- six months after turning 18.
