Hello All - I just wanted to share with you the letter I sent to our Priest about National Adoption Awareness Month. If you belong to a parish that has not really ever focused on adoption at all, I encourage you all to do the same!Good Morning Fr., I just wanted to send you a little note about a topic near and dear to our family. November is National Adoption Awareness Month. As an adoptive mother, I feel it is part of my duty to help others have an appreciation and understanding of adoption. Adoption can be so beautiful, and I feel it is rooted so deeply in the church. It would be nice to hear adoption spoken of more openly in the church. It is a positive option for a married couple who feel God's call to become parents and are struggling with infertility. Today's solutions for fertility, which go against the church's teachings and respect for life, are pressured on young couples when they are having difficulties conceiving and adoption is offered as a last resort. My husband and I experienced that pressure and we struggled with the decision to walk away and choose adoption. We felt so much peace in our hearts when we made that decision and we know it was God blessing us. Faith is very important to our family and as our son grows (and other childern who we pray will join our family), we want to teach him how his adoption story is rooted in our faith. We tell him how we pray very hard to St. Joseph, the adoptive father of Jesus, to intercede and help our family grow and bring our childern home to us. We pray to St. Anne and our Blessed Mother to care for and pray for our son's Birth Family. When we tell our adoption story, we know it has always been God's plan for our family. We tell our son that God placed him in Mommy and Daddy's heart long ago. I know there are more adoption references in the bible and I am trying to learn and grow in my faith, so my son (and other childern) can feel a connection to Jesus and the church through his adoption story. This is just a little snipit of my family's story I wanted to share with you. I was wondering if this month, if there was an opritunity to help the cogregation of our church to become a little more aware of adoption and the church. Maybe an intention or something, I don't know. Thank you, Fr. for taking the time to read my story. God Bless,
