Back when we started our home study, I started contacting agencies that did AA and BR placements, to get more info etc. I had no idea they would all start e-mailing me situations when they knew we were open raciallt to any infant, but they did. One situation that we were e-mailed, sounded really great, but we didn't have our financing yet and weren't comfortable submitting our profile for an expectant mother when we didn't know if we would get approved for the amount the adoption would cost. It turns out we didn't. That was two months ago. Today, I got an e-mail from another source and it was the same situation we had gotten two months ago. It makes me sad that two months later, they are still looking for an adoptive family for this expectant mother :( The fees are higher than we can afford, but I wouldn't say they are off the charts. 25K. Whether it is that the expecant mother doesn't feel like she has found the right family in the families she's been shown or they just haven't had many families to show her, it still makes me sad...two months seems like a long time for her to wait while trying to find a family that she wants to place with. Wish we had the extra 5K...

I've gotta say this too, though. Maybe the reason they've not found a family, is because the birthmother wants a specific amount of money, and no one is willing to pay it yet?
I agree completely too, this fee is way too high; though we've not ever been able to conduct an adoption for the fees Kat-L has quoted. (Were yours through the foster care system, Kat-L?)
Even so, of the last three babies we've adopted, two were under the 12k mark, while the last one was just nearer to that (including our homestudy on all adoptions). BTW....our last baby came last year.
Sadly, adoption IS a business all too often. My suggestion is to stay with situations where the babies have already been born and the birthparents have---or are very close to signing for releasement. Also, try to deal with agencies/attorneys that only accept monies once the babies are actually released for adoption...or at least refund any big monies back to you---not as these 'rollovers'...which just means they're using your money while you wait. :(
Sincerely,
Linny
the AA adoptions are 14,000, plus medical of 5-7K....the bring the borht mother TO utah, so they don't qualify for medicaid. They do require the whole fee at placement though.
I would love to find an adoption where the fees were anywhere close to what you mention. I've found a couple situations, but typically the mother in these situations are either placing through an agency that requires religious statements from a church, or want a family where either one (or both) parents are AA, or there are other children in the family that are AA. There is one situation where the agency fees are sliding, and that puts us at 19,500, just for the agency fees!
It just seems like for us, every agency that is reasonable, has some sort of criteria that will not allow us to use them.
I'm STILL open to suggestions regarding agencies to use that have lower fees! :)
