Lately, the last page of every book we read apparently has invisible text, legible only to H, that says AGAIN! Seriously, he wants us to read the same book to him 10 times in a row. It's not that I object to reading to him, of course, but he won't let you read a different book, you must read the same one over and over. Anyone else w/ this issue?

Totally normal. I've read the same book to Katie at least 10 times with her insisting "again, again". You begin to know the words by heart and don't really need to look at the book. Just don't try and change anything, if you try and slip something in, they'll correct you in an instant.
It's the same thing with songs...over and over and over again!

It's all about the repetition here too--not only do we have to read the same book over and over...we also have to repeat the same songs in the car. She listens and tries to sing along, getting a little better each time. It's HILARIOUS.
(the first 17 times!)
I read somewhere that while toddlers live for the repetition, you don't harm them by giving them a little variety now and then. (ie, leaving the favorite CD at home and introducing a new one, picking out a new book from the shelf, etc)We stumble upon new favorite this way every so often.
It's totally normal - as everyone has said; toddlers love repetition in everything (daily routines, music, books, tv, etc.) and will hang on to favorites for what seems like forever!
My little one even has a "kissing routine!" first it's a lip kiss, then a hug on one shoulder, then a nose rub, then a hug on the other shoulder...try to do something different and she'll tell you "NO!" and start ALL OVER again!
Too cute!!! DD is like Jenna's son...She may want to hear it one more time, but now she INSISTS on "reading" the book I just read herself. DH and I made the horrible mistake of buying a nursery rhymes CD for our car. If I hear "apples and bananas" one more time (does anyone else know this hideous monstrosity of a song), I am going to implode.

Oh we've been through apples and bananas (drove me bananas)....and then moved on to Philadelphia Chickens, which is at least adults singing!
Em, we've gone through the "Snuggle Puppy" phase...and the "Cows", "Philadelphia Chickens", "Be Like a Duck", and are now on a 5 song set--"Belly Button" through the end of the dinosaur trio. She thinks the new agey sounds at the beginning of "Belly Butt" are a tiger, which is HILARIOUS (ooh...tiger scary....every time we play it). She concedes the Busy Song to me, then sings along with the Dinosaur parts.
I find it funny how quickly she'll add parts to her routine--for the longest time it's been blanket, pillow, rabbit for bedtime--just this week she's added a boxed set of books with a handle and an issue of National Geographic. Everything has to be positioned just so for her lay down.
And now that she's memorized "Angel of God, my guardian dear", we take turn reciting that prayer until I finally move into the "God Bless...." the whole litany of relatives.
Living with a toddler is like living in the movie Groundhog's Day!!
Some nights, just to change things up, I'll tell my girls it's Mama's turn to pick a book.
To break up the same songs routine, I've insisted we listen to Christmas music for the time being. Between kids songs in the car and at home, I've had all I can of "Yankee Doodle" (or Raccaroni, as it's know at my house), "Oh, My Darling" and "There's a Hole in My Bucket" for at least the holiday season. Now they just want to listen to "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" a hundred times a day. I can't win!
How did I miss this thread until now?? Echoes of the same woes here. The end of every book in our house is, 'GAIN! One of her favorite books is a huge picture book with different color pages. Each page has items of that color to find. She LOVES this book, and we go painstakingly through each page... "Where is the frog? Do you see another frog? Where is a boat? Where is another boat? Do you see more boats? Etc...... It has become the joke between DH and I that the most horrid thing to hear at the blessed end of that book is a chirpy little 'GAIN! :hypno: She'll go for days or a week wanting to hear a particular book before nap or bed, and then, out of the blue, just as I'm about to go bonkers, she'll choose another favorite. Good thing our little ones are so sweet!

I thought again of this thread yesterday as we were getting ready to eat after church. we were at a local restaurant that we go to most Sunday's. We said "grace" and as we did so, my little one bowed his head quietly and when we were done, he yelled "AMEN!" which got the happy approval of his grandparents. I guess he liked that attention becasue he said "AGAIN!" until we did another prayer, to which he responded, "AGAIN!". Our food was blessed about five times before we ever got it to the table. I wonder what the people around us thought ;)
Must be karma of some kind.... I posted this thread Friday. Sunday the ice storm blew in. We've been w/out power (and therefore w/out Thomas, Harry Potter or any of our other favorite DVDS or music) for 3 days now. And we can't go outside. And there are no D batteries left in the whole city. So we've been reading. And reading. And reading AGAIN..... We'd just been to get new books on Sunday before the power went out, thank goodness. But I have now memorized HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS, SNOWMEN AT CHRISTMAS, OLIVIA HELPS WITH CHRISTMAS, SNOWMEN AT NIGHT to add to my repetoire of books I can read w/out looking. Could be worse, I guess. He could be one of those kids who don't like being read to.
We're now grooving on the Muppets Christmas album--specifically, "deck the halls". We can listen to it 6 times between home and daycare. Each time, as it ends, the actual phrase, "Let's do it again!" is exclaimed with such joy, such determination, such gosh darn cuteness, I finally just set it on repeat.
Fa La La La La La La La La!
