Good afternoon, i need help finding information on my adoption, i was born the 8th of February, 1981 in Yakima Wa, My current career requires me to have medical screenings every 6 months or get disqualified. I need help finding my medical records. I'm not looking to bother my birth mom or dad, and not looking to bring hardship on them or my own family. I just need help understanding how to get my medical records. A reunion would be nice but I understand that i was adopted for a reason and realize from talking to other adoptees that sometimes birth parents want nothing to do with you. So like I said, I'm not looking to harass or bother anyone, If you can help I would appreciate it. thanks and fly safely.
Hi-
Even if you were to get the medical info in your adoption file, that info would only be current to 1981. Considering 25+ years have passed and the advances in medicine, that info isn't likely to be very helpful.
About birthparents not wanting to be found, it's true that some don't want to be found, but those percentages are pretty low, probably less than 10-15%.
Most birth moms have wondered about their child and many times regretted ever giving that baby up. There are many reasons why a birth mom may have gave a baby up but sadly all too often they were pressured and coerced. I highly recommend you read the book "The Girls That Went Away" by Ann Fessler. I actually think all adoptees, birth moms, birth families, and everyone else in the U.S. should read the book, it's that good and enlightening.
If you want to get your "non-identifying information" (non-id), you can get it from the county where the adoption was finalized (usually same county where adoptive parents lived), adoption agency (if one was involved), and/or DSHS (if they were involved).
If you need some help with this, there's a great Yahoo group that helps with search and reunions in the Northwest. Go to Yahoo Groups and search for "northwest search reunion" and you'll find it. All help is free. Most people find it really helpful to hear other's stories as they go through the search and reunion process.
Good luck!
