Hi, this is my first post (just joined this forum), and I am hoping to get some feedback on adopting domestically (private, AA adoption). We already have 2 Guatemalan born boys (ages 2 and 4) and are considering adding a third child to our family. Guatemala is out as they are basically closed to new referrals. I am concerned and very confused about the fees for domestic adoptions though. They seem to vary from "situation" to "situation" depending on the birthmom expenses, etc. With international adoption you know the exact fees upfront so you can plan and be prepared. Money is the one big obstacle to our next adoption....so if I don't know how much it is going to cost, then how can I know if we can even afford to pursue it? I know about the fed tax credit--it really helped with our two previous adoptions--but it is coming up with this lump sum that is going to be a real challenge this time around. It's awful that this is "the" obstacle, but it is. Is anyone willing to give me some guidance in this area? Thanks much!
My only advice is to do your homework in terms of watching what some agencies will charge and what some don't. IMO, don't deal with agencies that request any large amounts of money up front. There ARE agencies that don't do this; even though it may take some searching to find them.
Also, know what you want up front and proceed cautiously with any situation that doesn't match that initial category. I say this, because sometimes it's really easy to submit or accept a situation because you think there'll be no others. This just isn't so; and if the situation is too expensive, rest assured there ARE reasonable adoption fees out there w/o a lot of extra fees added on.
There are a million ways to try to obtain monies for adoption. We've personally re-financed our home for a lower interest rate....and borrowed more for an adoption as well.
Some people actually use their credit cards for some fees.....and I've known one to obtain a very reasonable loan for adoption from one company---though I don't know if that fixed rate of interest is still available.
Others have borrowed from family/friends/church and other groups. There ARE several places to apply for grants...though DO be careful that you don't find yourself paying a substantial fee just to submit an app. (Grrrr.........)
I'll be glad to send you my own list of adoption agencies/attorneys that---for the most part---continue to have reasonable fees. (While I have to admit, I find that most agencies/attorneys are asking FAR too much for adoption anymore... :( ) Just pm me if you'd like this.
My best to you....
Sincerely,
Linny
