I adopted from Guatemala 2 years ago, now working on another IA. Can someone tell me if the I-797 replaced some form? What was the I-171H?
From some Goggle searches, the I797 seems to relate to work visas, not immigration visas.
The 171H is issued upon approval of your I600A and is your approval for international adoption. The I600A is being replaced in some instances now with the I800A if it is a Hague Country.
Hope that helps!

not exactly. i filed a I600A in January. it looks like the I800 wasn't instituted until sometime in Feb. the I-797 form i got said my I600A was approved. i'm not 100% if my country is Hague or not. guess i need to find out.
Hmmm . . . . Interesting. A Google search for I797 only turned up things about work visas. I know that some states do have another form they issue instead of a 171H. Can't remember for the life of me what it is, but it is the same thing as a 171H. Maybe that is it. You might try posting on the Guat board. Someone there is sure to know. I would double check on if that country you are adopting from in Hague though. Just to be sure you have the right paperwork going in. Especially if you origionally filed before the US became Hague.
Good luck!
The 797-C and the 171-H are newer and older versions of the same form. Some USCIS offices use one and some use the other. I think that the original plan was for the 797-C to replace the 171-H, but it's been a few years since the 797-C came out and both forms are still in use.
