My husband and are are discussing adopting a baby in the next 3-4 years. We are interested in International Adoption, several countries appeal to us. The problem is that my husband has a federal felony conviction from when he was 19. It was not a violent or child related crime - he was convicted of internet fraud (steeling peoples credit cards online). He got one year and one day in a federal penitentiary but got out on good time at 9 months. He did his 2 years parol with no incident. He has never had any further conflicts with the law (maybe a few speeding tickets). The thing is, we are still paying restitution and will be for a very long time. Right now, we owe over $120,000 to a victims fund. We do, however, pay on time every month and we are paying as much as we can ($6,000 per year). He's 29 now so his conviction was 10 years ago.
I was just wondering if we still have a chance to adopt Internationally. I don't want to start getting into this and getting my hope up if there is no chance it'll happen. So far, the 3 agencies we have contacted through email have told us that no country will allow us to adopt from them. Are their any countries who are willing to work with felons?
Is domestic adoption out of the question as well?
Thank you so much.
