Hi all! We are just starting on getting the paperwork together for our first adoption. I've breastfed my three kids and would like to try b'feeding our adopted child too. It's an international adoption and our baby will be around 3 - 4 months old when he/she comes home. I'm still b'feeding my 10 month old and will probably still be nursing when our baby comes home, so establishing a supply is not the problem. I'm wondering how I'll get a child of that age to nurse. I'm thinking he/she will look at me like "What the...?? Are you nuts woman??" if I offer the breast? Also, has anyone had any thought about if it is ok (as in not taboo or wrong in some way) to b'feed an adopted baby?
Hello,
There are lots of people who have breastfed adopted babies, and I've met quite a few now who have done it with internationally adopted babies as well - I am one of them! Our son was 5 months when we picked him up, and he is still nursing now at 2 years. It really is an amazing way to build that bond, it has been worth every second.
That is really great that you already have an established supply - that will save you loads of time!
Can I ask where are you adopting from?
I can forward you some info on getting an "older" baby to nurse if you'd like - just PM me. Our son latched on right away and we had no issues with that at all. In fact, we had the opposite problem - it is all he wanted to do even when we wanted him to take a bottle!
Anyways, PM me if you want more info - good luck!
