It was quite an internet search to figure it all out, but I subscribed to davidgrayspeoplefinder.com. I found my adoptive name in the birth book, with my correct birth certificate number. Then I went to search the birth index. Based on the instructions, being born in 1961, there should have been an "inf of" listing for my birth date and county. But there wasn't any on that date in my county - though of course my record was there under my adoptive name.
Why wouldn't it be there? I was born in 1961, which as I understand it was within the time frame when both birth and adoptive records were listed in the index. I noticed in one of the FAQs for the alt.adoption newsgroup that in some cases Texas did change birth dates or counties, though prior posts on this board seem to say that should be pretty rare.
My first thought was to check each of the births listed in the index from my county/birthday against the birth book, figuring that if one isn't there it's a possibility. In case only the county was changed, I guess I could do an all-Texas search for my birthday and see what happens. If only the birth date was changed I guess I could go through dates before and after my birth date in an every widening circle to see if I can find an "in of." If both were changed, I think I'm hosed, at least for this approach.
Any suggestions as to where to go from here? I am listed on various registries and have started the search process through my adoption agency as well.
