I have been going nuts!
I had been trying to pin down the date of our MAPP classes because my DH and I lost a lot of our paper documents in a flood. Our stuff was in storage during one of Florida's famous waist high floods. By the time the water dissipated...and we were able to get into our storage unit...everything paper was black mold...medical records, family photos art / posters, school yearbooks. We had to throw out things that were unrecognizable to us. We did not even know if one of those papers was our MAPP certificate.
We were told ( about 5 yrs back) our MAPP certificate would be good for 5 years, but now since Florida has been privatized, we could not get anyone to tell us if it is still good, or if all that has changed now. We could not verify the exact date, no longer having a record of it. Plus the old posts where I had been panicking over MAPP must be archived. No one in Orange county knew and Seminole has not gotten back to us.
We had been anticipating needing to do MAPP again. IF it was over 5 years ago, but if it was less than 5 years ago, we thought me may not need to do it again.
My DH just found our MAPP certificate and it is dated:
February 9th 2004. That would make February 9th 2009 5 years to the day.
Does anyone who has fostered, Fostered-Adopted, or Adopted through Florida with a MAPP completion know if that would be a good certificate 5 years to the day :(... OR...a good certificate through that 5th year? :)
Please help!!! If you are experienced with Florida's system, any and all input would be appreciated!!
Thank you.

Tee
....not exactly the one I wanted to hear!
Unfortunately the MAPP expires 5 years from the date it was issued.

We didn't take any kids this last licensing year and we were told we have to re-take MAPP before they will license us again. So we will not be doing care in Florida again. This is ridiculous. We've take care of over 60 children and decide to take a year off - now we have to start clear over???? Not happenin. Our county is down to about 10 families now - and will be down even further by the time they finish 'running us off'! And they advertise for homes!!!
OMG! Amahmama..how can they do that? How is that in the best interest of the children?
I really do not understand procedure, do you have to get licensed every year?
I understand you took a year off...but what is the procedure (other than fostering) if any, to upkeep your license? Is there some kind of test every year, or is it strictly to continue care year round?
Thank you for sharing, and your reply.

Oh no. I've been worried about this. We completed MAPP in November of 05'. So 5 years won't be until November of this year. BUT...our license ran out in mid 08' and we have not renewed, but want to renew now. Because it has been almost 2 years since we have been licensed, I bet they will make us take MAPP again? Arrggghh!
It had just barely been 5 years since MAPP (like June 2004 was our 1st license date) and in June 2009 they said they weren't relicenseing until we came back in November 2009. But if they had relicensed in June - but they didnt. We kept up all of our annual training hours and did Foundations in Oregon too. Did the health inspections. Completed all of the paperwork required to relicense - all of the compliance things we did EVERY year when we relicensed. And it wasn't like we just took a year off - we were gone for most of the year and when we got back they told us we couldn't even do respite since we hadn't had our quarterly 'visits' - while we had no kids and were not in residence. We actually had our home rented out for 6 months while we were gone.
So now - we are certified in Oregon. We go there every summer anyhow and they are glad to have us to take short term and respite.
So - according to my experience with the 'system' yes, you will have to take MAPP again - redo the entire homestudy - just like you had never been there.
It's crap. Just one more way to waste money and flex their muscles. Sorry, I have a bad taste about the entire FL foster care experience. Worst in the 3 states I've dealt with.

That is crazy! There are so many children out there in need and the hoops they make us jump through is just crazy! I am not going to be happy if we have to do MAPP again. :hissy:

MAPP training is only good for 5 years. We were told in our class that foster parents will have to retake it every 5 years to stay licensed and that adoptive parents will also have to retake it if they aren't matched within 5 years or adopt again outside of that time.
