My daughter and husband abandoned her 3 girls and they have lived with me for the last 6 years. I get no financial assistance, am now living on disability retirement. Had to file bankruptcy earlier this year. THe girls are now 12, 13 and 17. My daughter, a drug addict, agrees to my adopting them. THe father's whereabouts are unknown. He has not seen them for 5-1/2 years. I need help in accomplishing this. I have no funds for an attorney. Is there any help for me? What or who can assist me?
I would try first just contacting your local social services department and seeing what they suggest. My thought is they can probably provide you with the resources to accomplish the adoption for free or very little cost. Are you in the United States? If so, you should also be able to secure EITHER subsidized guardianship or TANF funds for the girls. Neither is a whole lot, but its something.
But, I think social services is a good starting place regarding what your options are.

Call Social Services. Don't worry about an attorney, they will take care of that. Your daughter will have abandonment on her record. It will take time, and investigation, and you'll probably need to take some classes. They will want the girls to be in a home where they are loved.
I'm not sure if they will have questions about the past five years, but you have to start somewhere.
Good luck. Keep us posted on what happens.
