Hello! My name is Karla and I am from Northeast Indiana. I wanted to introduce myself to everyone :) My husband and I are in the process of getting our foster care license. We have recently completed our training so all we have to do is turn in our paperwork (it's almost done) and have our homestudy. We have struggled to have our own children and became interested in fostering to adopt. We look forward to accepting children, even knowing the possiblility that we may not keep them forever. I look forward to getting to know others on this forum and to gain more information about issues related to fostering/adopting.
I have a couple of questions as well. The first one is how long does it typically take from the time you turn in the paperwork until the homestudy is complete? Also, how long does it usually take to get a child into the home (I know this can vary, but I am hoping it is sooner rather than later!) :) Thanks!

First of all, welcome!
The first one is how long does it typically take from the time you turn in the paperwork until the homestudy is complete? Mine was less than a month. I was told they only have 30 days to get it done. I don't know if this is county to county or statewide, however.
Also, how long does it usually take to get a child into the home (I know this can vary, but I am hoping it is sooner rather than later!)
We finished our paperwork and turned it in march 1, had our homestudy done later that month, and got our license and first kids on april 7!
Good luck!

Our homestudy was done in August 06 and we were officially licensed in Oct 06. Got our first call and first placement in June 07.Good luck to you! We are in a rural county, so I have an idea that's the reason it took us so long to get a call.Edit to add: Murphy's law says it's a sure thing you'll get a call as soon as you start a project or plan a trip. LOL
Thanks everyone for the replies! That really helps! I am concerned it may take a while because I heard that from another foster mom that has the same case manager that I will have that she does not place children in homes of people she doesn't know. That includes new foster families. This particular foster mom did not get a child for a year. We really don't want to wait that long! I am going to make sure we get to know her and she gets to know us!

I was told Friday that as soon as youre licensed you can call other counties and tell them you are open. I know that Tipacanoe (sp) county has a lot of straight foster homes and not a whole lot of fost/adopt. I don't know if that's close enough to you, but I would call them as soon as you can. According to a CW friend of mine, they get a lot of babies and have to use straight foster homes for them.
