Ind. families sought for dozens of Haitian orphans
Associated Press - January 20, 2010 12:54 PM ET
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A suburban Indianapolis church is working with a Christian social service group to find homes for possibly dozens of Haitian orphans coming to Indiana following the country's massive earthquake.
Grace Community Church in Noblesville and the Indianapolis office of Safe Families for Children are looking to place the children. A Safe Families Web site says that since Tuesday night the group already has 75 families interested in adoption.
Safe Families says the Indiana Department of Child Services has confirmed that the orphans will be coming to the state. It was unclear how many children were involved and when they would arrive.
Calls to the church and Safe Families on Wednesday were referred to the Web site, while messages left for Department of Child Services officials weren't immediately returned.

We are one of the families in contact with DCS and Safe Families. Their website has huge amounts of 'hits'. They have more than enough families at this time and are no longer looking for additional families. We are still hoping, but have not heard anything yet. We also left a message to our homefinder and her supervisor, as well as another supervisor we are friendly with. At this time, there are more questions than answers! No knows how many children will be arriving, ages, genders, conditions, etc.We are praying to be a part of this situation, but I must admit, I am concerned that the state is just going to drop these kids and leave everyone grasping at how to move forward from here. To my understanding, these kids are already confirmed orphans and they are asking the families who are signed up be willing to commit to adoption. They are currently only placing in Indy and surrounding counties. I can send you the link to the Safe Families website by PM.Only time will tell how it all goes!

I am going to go ahead and close this. At this time, they are no longer accepting any additional families for the hand full of children who are being allowed to come to the US - most of which already have identified adoptive families, because they were in the process to start with. At this time, there is no governmental infrastructure in place in Haiti that would allow for adoptions to go forward during this time. The US and The Hague Treaty have specific requirements which MUST be met in order for children to be eligible for adoption - at this point, there isn't even any clear indication if these children would even qualify for adoption. The best way to help is to donate to help the families left in Haiti who have nothing left to speak of.Thanks everyone for your efforts :)
