OKay,
I searched for older posts before wanting to post this. I'm a super excited and nervous woman. LOL. we are just starting our paperwork (application, consent forms, fingerprints) but I know its gonna take a bit to get the things we will need for our future child. We are going to be doing the foster to adopt. Now my question is, when did you all start buying stuff for the kids room. You know, bed, dresser, stuff like that. I know that i can't get clothes or anything crazy like that now, we don't know what we will be getting (boy/girl) or age. Just wondering what your opinions are on this.
Thanks!:D
We are in the same situation....we are about to be licensed. We are adopting a girl and have 3 sons. We just moved our 2 oldest together int he BIG bedroom and are picking out paint colors for the girls room this weekend. We ended up buying a beautiful girls bedroom set (used) from a friend. It is in MINT condition with four poster bed, nightstand, dresser, desk with hutch above and another dresser with hutch above for $500! We will have the room ready in the next few weeks hopfully and we should be licensed in about 2-3 more weeks. So then we'll wait for the call! Good luck! Look on craigslist!

I keep thinking about this and we haven't even started yet! We are hoping for either one or a sib set of two, so I'm not sure about the beds. If we find something on Craigslist, we'll pick it up and refinish it so it's like new (nothing like second hand that doesn't LOOK like second hand-most of our furniture now is like this, we're redone it so it looks nice and it was cheap). We're also going to leave the room whatever color it is (we're house hunting now) and let the kiddos help us repaint it however he/they want it after they settle in.
:happydance: First training on Feb 6. CPR stuff. I'm excited. But right now I'm all stressed cause I can't find My house insurance papers! :grr:
If we can't find them, I'm gonna have to call to get some copies from the company which is like 45 min away. I don't like :drive: on the freeway. But I WILL DO WHAT I HAVE TO TO GET MY FUTURE :male: OR :cheer: !
I had no idea how long certification took so I started way too early on the bedroom. We turned in our paperwork in May and had the room done about the same time. We didn't actually get certified until almost september. The caseworker thought we were nuts to do it so early and it is kind of weird having that space decorated with no kid to put in it. We have tested it out on visiting nieces to get their nod of approval. We got a bunk bed with steps/ built in dresser and a pack and play so we are covered for most ages. We live right next to many stores so picking up a crib/ toddler bed should be easy enough. A small bookcase and storage for toys is useful. They certified us for 3 since the bunk has a trundle. We let them although we are looking for a placement with 1-2 kids age 0-5. I think setting up early is fine if you want to do some real decorating. It is important to leave room for the child's personal tastes as well. It is Feb now and we are being considered for several infant/ toddler placements so hopefully good news soon.
Jocasta2,
I was just looking around and noticed you posted. The agency we go through said that we would be licensed by March! Its a small agency so the training is done in 1 to 2 days all together. We've already done the background check and fingerprints. just have to do the TB tests and health/fire inspection. and the home study, which the director said she would do in one day! (thats gonna be a long day). also was told that since there are maybe a few foster/adopt homes in my county we shouldnt have to wait as long for a placement. I'm super excited and nervous. I have a carseat that is good for infant and toddler. a crib on the way thats also a toddler bed.(free mattress!) I just need the little stuff like toys and sheets, blankets dresser. We're gonna be turning half our garage into a laundry room so we can put the cat boxes in there. its just a one wall job. We just turned our application in jan. 27th. and should be licensed by sometime in march! Crazy! We're going for 0-3 yr old.

I'm maybe the odd one here, but I started decorating and doing up the room almost immediately. I knew I wanted a boy 0-12 months so I bought clothes from 0-3 months up to 12-18 months and I had a whole closet of diapers from newborn up to a size 4. The entire thing including the closet stuffed full of clothes was complete about a month after my first class. As it turned out, it was a good thing too. Max was placed with me before I had my license in hand. From start to the day he came home was about four months.
Wow! See thats why I'm starting now. I've heard so many people say that they got a child really quickly. I don't want to find myself at a store at midnight looking for a bed and stuff. But I am waiting to buy clothes and diapers. We're wanting 0-2yrs. I have to buy i little at a time so i don't break us LOL.
I guess I have started too- We have bunks that we were using for our DD's ,who are 8, and wanted single twin beds. So we moved their bunks into the storage garage and I am just going to re- do them as the are the Step 2 plastic kind and they were used when we bought them.
We bought DD 12 a bunk with a full on the bottom and twin on top.
I think I have a hording problem :D as I tend to keep everything. And I like other peoples junk, so I have been collecting clothes and toys as my friends kids out grow them.
We are working on the 4th bedroom, turning my sewing room into a tween's paradise.
Maybe I am obsessing a little...
We have just about finished renovating our entire house. Paint, floors, etc. I have both kids rooms already setup and painted neutral colors, one is green, the other is tan. We want a boy and girl 3-10(ish) age range. My thought was get the rooms done, then when we have a child placed, we can make a midnight run to Walmart if we need clothes etc.
We have carseats/boosters, beds, dressers, and toys in the rooms. We bought toys like Legos, Crayons and coloring books, baby dolls, and trucks/cars. Things that have a larger age range.
IF there is a situation with a baby, we do have a porta crib from when our nieces and nephews were younger, but I don't think we will be doing infants, outside of maybe a respite once and awhile.
Good luck! You and I are on the same schedule just about. Our homestudy is done before PRIDE training ends, so we'll be ready for placements the day after training is over.

I was also excited so I had the two beds (complete with brand new sheets, comforters, pillows, etc), dressers and toys all ready for the first homevisit. I thought the CW would want to see it all but she was really just there to go over all the paperwork and make sure I wanted to be a foster parent. Like that was not obvious! Anyway, after that first visit, I ended up with a relative placement (not thru the agency). I bought a bunch of stuff for that little girl, clothes, toys, etc. Up until she came, I thought I wanted boys so the room was really boy-ish. When she left, I reaffirmed that I wanted boys and boxed up all the girl toys and clothes. The room definately looks like it is meant for boys. I am hoping for a call for two or three brothers. I can add a set of bunk beds and take out a regular bed to make the room fit all 3. I also have a crib in the garage that I can set up if need be. But I really want over 6 years old so I don't think I will need the crib. And even though, I'd prefer boys, I will accept girl placements. The toys and clothes for girls are packed away but easily accessible. I will gradually add things as I can but at least the essentials (furniture) are there.
Oh yeah, I also have car seats from all stages (except infant) from when I'd have my nieces and nephews in my car (I bought my own because they are a pain to take out of my sister's car). And I believe my sister still has an infant if I'd need to use it but I doubt I will.
Hi...All. Well. It is good to shop after the girl/boy comes to home. Leave the whole shopping for him or her. This creates a feeling for them that they are given utmost importance and feel free to move early and easily. Hope this helps you....

oh heck.. I started shopping when I started foster classes ;)
Once the whirlwind of licensing/testing/paperwork was done and we were in that "forever" period before move in (almost 2 months), nesting kept me from going insane (not a patient person by nature)
It was not a logical timeline... and sure, i bought some things that didn't make sense once i got to knew her better, but it worked for me

Hi wcurry66,
I started buying little things as soon as we started the process as well, I started by buying little things that were on sale, bottles, pacifiers. THen there was a big sale and Bought a crib/toddler bed and it came with a free mattress and a convertable carseat. I have the basics and now i'm just saving money so when we know we can get gender specific things. Right now we are having problems getting them out here to do the health/fire inspections so my agency is having to call the state. otherwise we are ready to be licensed. we've done everything else. So now i'm trying to stay calm cause they're holding us back..:grr:

Yep, that gender specific part is the worst. Even when we were 75% sure we were getting the girly girl 6 year old, I was afraid to paint the room pink
Been there, done that on the health inspection delay. Ours was a nightmare. The health inspector decided I was pushy and decided to "punish us" (she later told our CW) by slowing things down and making us go through extra hoops (wanted us to get bottled water due to iron in our water :p ). So, act super nice and hang in there.
