My husband and I are interested in starting the adoption process. He is 35, and I will be 21 in may, which means I will finally be old enough to be able to adopt a child. Anyways, only my husband is working, and we can make it just fine on his salary. Our bills are always paid on time, we dont use any financial assistance, and we always have spare money left over that could be going to a child. We are also interested in adopting a newborn. Do you think the state will allow this? Thanks for any info!
your wait may be longer...that's what they told me at orientation....my age range was birth to 5 years old and I was matched and placed with a 4 month old.
If you are really set on children under the age of 2, they do have the relinquishment programs...just know that your wait will be longer. Good luck

One thing, luckily it won't cost you anything to adopt besides the costs of getting your home ready (child locks, etc) and your fingerprints. Once you do adopt it can cost about $400 for an attorney but you're reimbursed for it.
Regarding a newborn: if you are open to higher risk (higher risk a child will be returned to birtparents or birthfamily) you can be placed with a newborn. The younger the child the more uncertain the case can be because the child's case hasn't gone through the system yet; family hasn't been found or the bp's haven't even started their plan yet. But, if you're lucky then you could have the opportunity to adopt that child. I've seen cases go either way. I've had several families keep the first child they were placed with but had other families have a family reunification after 1 year. We had our daughter placed at 18 days old and were able to adopt her (after some scary ups and downs) so it is possible.
I would look into possibly working with an FFA (a non-profit family agency) that may be better at matching than going directly through the county. We went to one that specialized in children under 5.
Good luck to you.
