AD, age 5, has always had a strange obsession w/ babies and dogs. We have noticed it since she came to us at around 2 years old, but we weren't alarmed because - well - she was young.Recently we sought out a pediatric neurologist for help w/ her ADHD meds. We mentioned the obsessive interest in dogs and he mentioned Asperger's.We have an appt. w/ a child psych for help w/ the ADHD meds (the neuro was no help at all). Should we ask about Asperger's?She had a neuropsych eval this past summer and the psychologist did not mention Asperger's or Autism.Or, I was thinking the baby-dog thing could be a hold-over from her time w/ her birthparents? It really is a compulsion. Example: If she sees a dog at the park, she must go over and pet it. MUST. She absolutely cannot play until she does. Same w/ babies. She has also been diagnosed w/ sensory processing disorder as well as the ADHD.Thoughts?

Both my boys were diagnosed with ADHD and many other letters for years before me and after. It wasn't until last Nov. that they were both diagnosed with Asperger's. They both have obessions --my 12 year old is obsessed with Narnia and Star Wars. My 8 year old is obsessed with phones --everything becomes a phone, he has stolen them and called 911 on them. He is also obsessed with tying things up, keys and video games. My 8 year old is also bipolar and that would explain some of the ADHD type symptoms that he had. Both have sleep disorders and food issues -- they eat until they bust and then eat more unless I stop them. I would google Asperger's and look at the symptoms and see if you find any other ones besides obsessions. If you do I would ask about it.

Obsessiveness is definitely a symptoms of Asperger's, but like you said it could also be so many other things. Does your daughter have any other symptoms besides sensory? Is she a sensory seeker or avoider or both? Is she socially appropriate?
I think it's worth asking the Psych since you are seeing one anyway.
Good luck,
