I am a new adoptive parent who has an HMO. We reside in one state and our child was born in another state. Our child has been added to our policy and there has been no issue about care that has occurred in our state since we have returned. However, we are getting bills from the state of birth for the neonatologist visits our child had in the hospital. We know she should be covered as our biological chld would be. Anyone with info/experience in getting an HMO to pay (at least somethng) in this situation?

We are going through something similar right now. BM called us about a month ago saying the hospital is going after her for $6,000 in medical bills that our son racked up in CO. Our son is on our WI insurance and has been, but the hospital wont talk to us until they see an adoption decree. They don't understand that takes 6 + months. Now interest is incurring and they are hunting down his BM.
They keep saying "well come down to the hospital and get this straightened out" and I keep telling them we live in another state. It's so much harder over the phone especially because you always talk to different people each time.
I'm worried that once we submit the adoption decree half of these bills wont be covered for some reason. Our son had some medical issues at birth and saw several specialists. WHY around these children covered by the state until private insurance kicks in?? If their birthparents are covered but medicade..why aren't these children???
We are up to our eye balls in debt from his adoption.
I'd love to hear what others have to say.
