Hi, new here...We have been presented w/a possible situation where the mother is mildly-to-moderately mentally retarded (social worker's opinion, not mine. (and I'm not talking Down's Syndrome, this is just an "unexplained" disablement.)) She holds down a light job at a grocery superstore; she's in her 20's, has had prenatal care, not due till Sept or Oct. Lives w/her mother who is not mentally disabled.
From what I've read, most mental retardation is not hereditary.
Has anyone accepted a match with a birth mother who was mentally disabled, and were you concerned? And how is the child now?
Thank you.
Our daugher was placed with us through foster care when she was 18 months old. Mother has an IQ of 75 and has been in Special Ed classes all of her life. Her mother(grandma to our DD) was also in SE classes.
There is nothing wrong with DD. She is behind in some areas like speech, but that is due to her spending 9 months in foster care and not having the interaction she needed. She is now 33 months old.

My husband's mother would have been placed in that catagory and he and his brother have no mental developmental problems. I don't belive that is a heriditary issue.
Our situation is much like Caddo Rose. Our son is now 10 and has no learning issues. He's bright, athletic and physically beautiful (not just my opinion).
catmom74, my son's birthmother functions at the level of about an 8 year old. She cannot take care of herself. Knowing her personal, history, I theorize (and I am not a professional, at least not yet), that her low functioning is the result of abuse and deprivation. My boy was reading at the age of 3.5 years and writing at the age of 4. No signs of low cognitive abilities, he is extremely bright and very loving. He is all I had wished for and more.
Mental retardation can be due to many factors besides genetics such as e.g. abuse/neglect, oxygen deprivation at birth etc. That could be the case in your situation.
