I'm putting together all our receipts and things so when tax time comes around all I have to do is look on a paper and input what we've spent so far on the adoption without going through the trouble at the time of adding everything, etc.
Anyway.. I know costs such as legal (lawyers, court, etc), homestudies, and travel (food, lodging, gas, etc) are covered under the tax credit but what about medical bills? Namely prenatal care and delivery costs. I didn't see it mentioned on the IRS website.
Also my husband couldn't go back to work due to the adoption being out of state and the fact that our lawyer in that state was an idiot so even if he wanted to he couldn't have gone back. Will we be able to claim the lost wages or no?

The IRS is mum about whether pregnancy expenses or living expenses count as qualified adoption expenses. If it were me, I'd include medical ones necessary to the birth of a healthy child, but have those receipts marked well so if the IRS said I could not claim them they were easy to pull out.
Child care costs are not considered qualifying adoption expenses. So the costs of the child's medical care after birth won't count.
Lost wages also don't count as qualifying adoption expenses, because it's not a cost that you actually paid.
Hope that helps!
