So, my hot flashes are distracting me at DD's bed time. She likes to sit in my lap and read a book, but the flushing of my face and the heat makes it so I can only count down the seconds til this os over
Anyone have a treament that worked for this lovely time of life iritant?

* glass of ice cold water - as soon as it starts * excercise shirts - the kind with the tiny holes * hair dryer set on cold to the back of the neck * one of those neck bandanas that have some type of gel in them that you run under cold water to activate. but you have to change the sitting in the lap - nothing is going to help that...but mine came in cycles so if you are like me perhaps telling your daughter it is temporary?

Speaking as a person over FIFTY...let me tell you what I did:
I purchased the Estroven type stuff....pills to take, usually one a day. It's an herbal supplement...which is something I don't usually do. But, this stuff (and the off brands which are the same thing) worked VERY well. I often bought the Walgreens brand; but I know other chain stores have their own 'brand label' too. It DOES take a week or so to actually see results; but it's worked for me and others I've recommended it to.
Hope it might help you too....
Sincerely,
Linny
I am 44 and in surgically induced menopause...just had a total abdominal hyterectomy (everything out) 3.5 weeks ago. My doctor and I are working together to avoid hormone replacement therapy and I am taking natural supplements recommended by him. So far, so good...although Friday night I had some red wine before before...huge mistake...had horrid night sweats! I get a few minor warm flashes but nothing major.
I agree about drinking ice water to cool down your 'power surge' and I have found that wearing loose fitting, organic cotton sundresses are wonderful (helps with my incision as well.)
Good luck!
I echo Dickons' suggestion of a glass of ice water as soon as you feel the hot flash coming on. I also use a Ziplock bag filled with ice on the back of my neck. Another handy item is one of those gel-filled sinus masks that goes over your eyes. It makes you look like a really strange Zorro, but it does help!
I think I might try Linny's suggestion about the Estroven. I've been meaning to ask people how they like the supplement. I'm glad to hear that it's pretty effective. :loveyou:

update (and thats again for all the wonderful suggestions) - I started getting ice water before we start reading (impossible to get up with her in my lap). She decided she'd like to get it for me, so our nightly routine now invovles her taking the glass, getting the crushed ice from the dispenser, adding the water (again, ispenser). She's had to learn to read water/cubes/crushed. She's very proud of herself
I realized this happens a book time every night - not ue to her closeness, but due to my frustration at balancing 4 dogs, and a wriggly girl who wants to spend hours on asimple book. So i'm working that
I order estraven today. I noticed there's a pm version. For those of you who take it - Do you take pm and max strength both?
thanks again!
