Hello all.. we have a new AA FD... and it's my first experience with AA hair. I've read A LOT of threads already here and it;s been immensely helpful.
Her hair was in a big poof with a few braids coming out here and there... over the process of three (!!!) days we've removed all the braids, discovered her hair was VERY matted to her scalp, slooowlly removed the mats and tangles, and conditioned her scalp. Come to find out.. she's figured out that if she throws a fit her adopted mom wouldn't do her hair and thus where the problems began. I understand it hurts.. but wow... those mats were NOT fun to get out. I was really concerned a couple times that her hair would need to be cut off because they were so matted. I did finally get it all parted and her hair into ponytails and then two strand twisted.
I was going to shampoo it Saturday until I discovered how matted and dry it was. My plan is to moisturize moisturize moisturize this week and hopefully shampoo this upcoming weekend.
Does anyone have any tips for shampooing? Her hair is SUPER thick and snarls easily. Sectioning maybe? Any help is appreciated! :woohoo:
That doesn't sound like fun!
I would use a very mild shampoo and don't rub it around too much. Dig your fingers into the hair and massage the scalp gently but don't rub the hair. Rinse, then put gobs of thick conditioner in and gently comb the tangles out with a wide tooth comb. I would just do small sections at a time. Rinse then pat dry a little so it's not drippy and then put in a lot of leave in conditioner. Then I would massage some coconut oil into her scalp. After this initial shampooing to get it clean, I would not use shampoo after that. I would just wash it with conditioner (called no poo or cowash). Shampoo dries hair out and washing with conditioner still gets it clean and moisturizes at the same time. Never comb her hair when it's dry, only when in the bath and it's got conditioner on it. I would avoid anything with petroleum or mineral oil or a lot of chemicals. Sorry if you know this stuff already. Hope it helps, good luck!

That advice is perfection. Keep using the coconut oil to moisturize too :) Good Luck!
I have been educating myself on biracial hair care and I have found these two websites to be very helpful...
Happy Hair Girl (Happy Girl Hair: Natural Haircare for Kids) and Blended Beauty (www.blendedbeauty.com).
I hope they are helpful to you as well.
